Hurst named to Big 10 All-Conference First-Team

Senior forward Lamar Hurst was a major focal point for the head coach Travis Foster and his Buckhannon-Upshur High School Buccaneers this season, proving himself as one of the Mountain State’s premier talents and earning first-team Big 10 All-Conference honors for the second consecutive season. CLARKSBURG — This past Sunday, March 19, the Big 10 Conference announced their postseason awards and all-conference teams. Senior forward Lamar Hurst was the only Buccaneer named to either team. Hurst led the Buccaneers in both scoring and rebounding this year, proving himself to be one of the state’s premier inside-out offensive threats. Hurst simultaneously thrilled Buccaneer fans while being a mismatch machine that opposing players and coaches had to build their game plan around stopping. Hurst helped lead the 2021-22 Buccaneer basketball team to a 9-14 overall record, including a 7-6 record in Big 10 Conference play.

Grafton’s Ryan Maier was selected as the Player of the Year, while his head coach, Mike Johnson, of Grafton, walked away with Coach of the Year honors. Fresh off winning the Class-AAA State Championship on a “buzzer-beater”, Fairmont Senior stars Zycheus Dobbs and DeSean Goode were both named to the Big 10 first-team. The Polar Bears were one of four Big 10 teams that rostered two first-team all-conference players; joined by North Marion with Miller and Harley Sickles, Grafton with Justin Spiker and Kaden Delaney, and Elkins with Corey Harper and Tanner Miller.

East Fairmont’s Evan Parr, Robert C. Byrd’s Brayden Thomasson, Bridgeport’s Mitchell Duez, and Hurst rounded out the rest of first-team All-Big 10 selections.

East Fairmont’s Jackson Crouso, North Marion’s Preston Williams, Fairmont Senior’s Eric Smith, Robert C. Byrd’s Jeremiah King and Quinton Cooley, Lincoln’s Wes Heldreth and Sammy Bart, Bridgeport’s Anthony Spatafore, Liberty’s Conner Holden, Philip Barbour’s T.D. Bodkins, Preston’s Mason Sergent and Lewis County’s Tanner Griffith made up the second-team.
