Hurst goes for 28 points as Bucs easily slip past Preston, 77-57

KINGWOOD – Senior point guard Ryan Hurst scored a game-high 27 points to lead the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers to a 77-57 road win over the Preston Knights Tuesday night in Big 10 Conference basketball action.

Hurst was red-hot from beyond the three-point line canning seven of his 11 attempts.

The Bucs also put two other players in double digits as Lamar Hurst tallied 15 points and Harrison Walker added 13.

“Preston decided to set in a zone and we thought we would see a lot of that,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster. “We were able to move the ball well and we were able to get guys open and they made their shots.”

The Bucs led from start to finish in the contest.

Lamar Hurst started the game with an old-fashioned three-point play after being fouled on his jumper and Harrison Walker made a jumper in the paint to give the Bucs an early 5-0 lead as they were off and running.

Preston made it a 5-4 game, but the Bucs scored 10 unanswered points for a 15-4 lead.

The Knights went on a 10-2 run to close the game to 17-14, but Ryan Hurst uncorked one of his three pointers, and after a pair of free throws by Preston, Ryan Hurst hit another three to put the Bucs ahead by seven, at 23-16.

The Bucs went into the second quarter up 23-18.

Buckhannon-Upshur went on a 9-0 run to start the second quarter taking a 32-18 advantage.

A Zach White jumper pushed the lead to 15, their biggest lead of the half, at 36-21, with three minutes left in the half.

The Bucs went scoreless the rest of the half though allowing Preston to trim their deficit down to nine at the break, at 36-27.

Ryan Hurst came out in the third quarter and quickly nailed a three-pointer and hit an outside jumper to put the B-U lead up to 14, at 41-27.

With the Bucs still up 14, at 51-37, they ended the quarter on a 7-0 run behind a three-pointer by Lamar Hurst, a put back by Josh Loudin and a lay-up from Will McCauley.

That gave them a 58-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Preston started the fourth quarter with a pair of three pointers to cut the B-U lead down to 15 at 58-43, but unlike their opener against Lincoln on Saturday, there would be no late rally by the opposition.

White quickly responded with a basket and McCauley made a lay-up to push the B-U right back to 19, at 62-43, with 5:18 remaining.

Preston couldn’t get any closer than 15 points the rest of the game as the Bucs were able to finish off the Knights for the 20-point win.

“We are beginning to understand the importance of every possession now after the Lincoln game,” said Foster about why his Bucs didn’t let Preston back into the game after almost blowing a 17-point lead last Saturday. “Preston brought it within 15 and we start sweating about it, but we are still learning how to win. We were able to keep up our defensive energy and that was the difference in this game. Our defensive pressure really bothered them, and I think that is where we capitalized in securing the win.”

The Bucs shot 55.1 percent from the floor hitting on 27 of their 49 field goals and shot 50.0 percent from behind the three-point arc making 11 of their 22 attempts.

J.C. Harris and Jaden Fultz led Preston with 18 points apiece.

Preston dropped to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big 10 Conference.

The Bucs improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big 10 Conference.

They will return to action today hosting Robert C. Byrd at 7:30 p.m.
