Hurst earns low medalist honors at Fairmont; Buccaneers takes runner-up honors in quad

FAIRMONT – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Brady Hurst earned low medalist honors in a quad outing Monday evening at the Fairmont Field Club.

Hurst fired a match-best 39, two full strokes better than the runner-up finishers.

Brady earned the win after shooting a 54 at B-U’s last match last week at Bel Meadow.

“Brady definitely rebounded well,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Westfall. “He can be his own worst enemy at times, but he stayed calm today and kept playing.”

Fairmont Senior held down the next three spots as Clark Craig and Gannon Satterfield finished in a tie for second with a 41 and Zackery Morgan took fourth with a 42.

The Bucs’ Evan Coffman finished fifth shooting a 46 while Isaac Lane and Landon Hitt each finished in a tie for sixth after firing 47s.

The non-scoring Bucs were Tucker Hurst with a 50 and Brayden Hamner with a 56.

“Evan and Isaac had rough days for them,” Westfall noted. “Evan had penalty strokes and Isaac had multiple three or four putts. The good thing is they know how to fix it. Landon is gaining momentum and when he breaks out, we will be tough to beat. I was extremely happy for Tucker as his scores are consistently coming down. He had a solid round.”

Fairmont Senior won the team title with a 174 while the Bucs took second with a 179 and East Fairmont was third with a 217. Trinity did not field a complete team.

“The course played tough today,” remarked Westfall. “It was very hot, and we had to battle through some adversity. Fairmont Senior’s goal is to always win a state championship and we want to pattern them and build to that as well. It was good to be able to compete with them. We have a lot of respect for their program.”

The Buccaneers were slated to have a home match on Tuesday.

They will return to action today at Elkins at 4 p.m.
