Hurst and McCauley led Bucs past Philip Barbour in 70-54 victory

TENNERTON – What better time for a senior to shine than on “Senior Night.”

Buckhannon-Upshur seniors Ryan Hurst and Will McCauley combined for 60 points to lead their Buccaneer squad to a convincing 70-54 victory over the visiting Philip Barbour Colts Thursday night at the high school gym.

Hurst tallied a game-high 29 points going 12-for-20 from the field including hitting five three-pointers while McCauley recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks.

Seniors Zach White and Josh Loudin also helped the cause as White scored six points and yanked down 10 rebounds while Loudin scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Noam Keith, the fifth senior on the team, got his second start of the season and added two steals and a free throw to the mix in the B-U win.

The Bucs trailed just once, down 5-4 early with two minutes gone in the game.

Hurst nailed a three-pointer to give the lead back to the Bucs at 7-5, and after a basket by Philip Barbour’s Jed Hawkins, Hurst put in consecutive baskets to treat the Bucs to an 11-7 lead.

McCauley scored the team’s final six points of the quarter as the Bucs owned a 17-11 lead at the end of one quarter.

The Colts closed the B-U lead down to four, at 22-18, but Loudin scored from underneath and Hurst drained another three to shoot the Buc advantage back to nine, at 27-18.

Up eight, at 29-21, White scored on a putback and Hurst scored on an outside jumper to make it a 31-21 game with 3:46 left in the half.

A 9-0 run late in the quarter lifted the Bucs’ lead to 17, at 40-23 before Trenton Whited made two free throws for the Colts to wrap up the first half, leaving the Bucs up by 15, at 40-25.

With B-U leading, 44-27, the Colts went on a 9-0 run to cut their deficit down to eight, at 44-36, with 3:42 remaining in the quarter.

The Bucs called a timeout to regroup and ended the quarter on a 10-5 run for a 54-41 advantage heading into the final period.

A jumper by White gave the Bucs their biggest lead of the game, at 62-44, with 3:46 left in the game.

The closest the Colts could get the rest of the game was 14 points.

Jesiah Matlick led the Colts with 14 points and Whited scored 10 as they dropped to 2-7 on the season.

The Bucs improved to 7-4 on the year as they prepare to take on Bridgeport Monday at home at 7:30 p.m.
