Hundreds gather for the 80th Annual Jr. Royalty Parade

BUCKHANNON — The 80th West Virginia Strawberry Festival (WVSF) hosted their Junior Royalty Parade during the evening on Thursday, May 19. The parade welcomed royalty from 2021 and 2022. Multiple dancing and twirling groups, local organizations and businesses, and school bands all marched along Strawberry Lane.

The weather held up nicely and, although hot, there was a cool breeze blowing gently among the streets. The parade marked one of the first major events with the resumption of a full schedule for the 80th festival, as COVID-19 had limited celebrations in the previous couple years.

Floats and trailers dazzled parade goers with strawberry and or 80s themed décor. Fancy cars also carried royalty from years past, as well as current WVSF Royalty. In addition, photogenic and poster/coloring contest winners rode along and waved at the crowds lined up on the streets. Royalty from the 2022 WVSF Pet Show even walked Strawberry Lane, as King Stark was seen walking proudly with his owner donned in his sash representing his title.

Local organizations and businesses tossed candy to children in the crowd, who would run happily to gather the treats that scattered Strawberry Lane.

It was truly a great event to showcase WVSF Royalty and contest winners and provide many dancing and twirlers the opportunity to shine. Buckhannon-Upshur High School Band marched eloquently on Strawberry Lane while playing their instruments and maintaining their tempo in synchronization.
