Huge first quarter lifts Lady Bucs past Preston, 56-30

Brooklyn Maxwell (14) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs puts in an lay-up in front of Preston’s Izzy Stahl (4) during the first half of their home opener Monday night. Maxwell had seven points and eight rebounds in the Lady Bucs’ 56-30 win.

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs jumped out to a 19-4 lead after one quarter over the Preston Lady Knights and never looked back en route to a convincing 56-30 victory here Monday night.

The first-quarter attack was led by the B-U defense as they forced Preston into eight turnovers in the first eight minutes of action.

Leading by a 4-2 score, the Lady Bucs scored nine answered points to grab a 13-2 advantage.

Audrey Gaudet scored on consecutive lay-ups, Shelby McDaniels knocked down a baseline jumper and Leigh Ann Bennett fired in a 3-pointer during the run.

Following a Preston basket, the Lady Bucs closed the quarter on a 6-0 run for their 19-4 advantage.

“We have been preaching to the team all year to bring the emotion and energy and getting after teams right from the get-go and setting the tone defensively,” remarked head coach Rob Kittle.

Despite causing six turnovers in the second quarter, the Lady Bucs couldn’t get their offense in the same rhythm as the first quarter.

They managed just one field goal in the first four minutes of the second quarter, a short baseline jumper by McKenzie Kittle.

Leading by a 23-11 score, the Lady Bucs closed the half on a 4-0 mini run behind baskets by Kittle and Brooklyn Maxwell.

That gave the Lady Bucs a 27-11 lead at the intermission.

Preston started the second half on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 27-17 forcing a B-U timeout, but Preston couldn’t get any closer as the Lady Bucs dominated the rest of the quarter.

“We came out of the half pretty dead and not ready to play,” Kittle commented. “I took a time out and told them they have to pick it up. That isn’t the way we play basketball. They stepped it up after the time out and took the game over from there.”

The Lady Bucs went on a 12-0 run to take a 39-17 lead getting six points from Alli Robinson, four from Gaudet and two from Bennett.

They extended their lead to 23 heading into the fourth quarter up 44-21.

With Gaudet, McDaniels, Kassidy Wilfong and Maxwell each scoring a basket to start the fourth-quarter, the Lady Bucs opened up a 31-point lead, at 52-21, with 5:23 left in the final frame.

With both teams going to their benches at that point, Preston outscored B-U 9-4 in the final five minutes of the contest.

Gaudet, despite not playing much in the first half because of foul trouble, led the Lady Bucs in scoring with 10 points.

She was followed in the scoring column by Robinson and Bennett who both tallied nine points and Kittle and Maxwell who each scored six.

Robinson just missed a double-double as she grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.

Bennett had a team-high five assists and four steals.

The Lady Buc defense held Preston to an 11-for-49 night on the floor for a 22.3 shooting percentage.

Michelle Thomas led Preston with 13 points.

“I loved our aggression on defense,” concluded Kittle. “We have played two really good defensive games now. We just have to shore up some things on the offensive end. But at the end of the day I couldn’t be happier that we got the win. Preston is in our section, so this will help with seeding down the road.”

The Lady Bucs, now 1-1 on the season, will return to action Thursday when they host the Lincoln Cougars for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
