Hudson picks up two wins as Lady ‘Cats sweep Notre Dame in doubleheader

BUCKHANNON – With Hannah Hudson back in the circle, the West Virginia Wesleyan softball team returned to their winning ways in a Mountain East Conference home doubleheader with the Notre Dame Falcons Saturday afternoon at Culpepper Field.

Hudson pitched a complete-game, five inning shutout for Wesleyan in game one as the Lady ‘Cats won an 11-0 decision.

In the nightcap, Hudson picked up the win in relief as Grace Smith had a walk-off single for Wesleyan as they won a 7-6 decision in nine-innings of action.

The two wins left head coach Steve Warner’s squad with a 3-3 record.

In the opener Saturday, Wesleyan took a 2-0 lead after one inning behind a one-run double by Kennedy Cowart and a one-run single by Kiley Turner.

The Lady ‘Cats extended their lead to 5-0 with a three-run second inning after Brooke Clark, Cowart, and Lauryn King each knocked in a run.

With Megan Osborne hitting a one-run double, Smith hitting a one-run single and Cowart sending a runner home when she reached on an error, Wesleyan took an 8-0 lead after three innings of play.

Osborne hit a one-run single, and Clark smacked a two-run triple to right field in the bottom of the fourth upping the Wesleyan lead to 11-0.

The game was called after the fifth on the mercy rule.

Wesleyan had 13 hits in the win with Clark, Smith, Cowart, and Kelley Bourne each getting two.

Hudson gave up just three hits and struck out six in the win.

In game two, Notre Dame took an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first, but Turner hit a one-run single in the the bottom of the first and Bella Posey knocked in a run in the bottom of the third tying the score at 2-2.

Notre Dame’s Daniele Rivera hit a two-run double in the top of the fourth to give the lead back to the Falcons at 4-2.

King blasted a solo home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the fifth to close it to a 4-3 contest.

A bases loaded ground out by Clark in the bottom of the seventh sent home pinch runner Maya Reyes deadlocking the game at 4-4 and forcing extra innings.

Notre Dame scored a run in the top of the eighth, but Wesleyan answered with a run of their own when King raced home on a wild pitch extending the game one more inning.

Notre Dame pushed a run across in the top of the ninth to make it 6-5 game, but Wesleyan won it in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of runs.

With one out in the ninth, Osborne drew a walk and gave way to pinch runner Lauren Niglio.

Clark doubled to right field scoring Niglio and Smith singled to center scoring Clark for the win.

Wesleyan had 14 hits in the win with Turner leading the way with three.

Hudson picked up the win in a relief role.

She tossed the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up an earned run on three hits while striking out one.

The pair of losses dropped Notre Dame to 6-8 on the year.

Wesleyan was slated to host Alderson-Broaddus yesterday in a twin bill.

They will visit Davis & Elkins Wednesday in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
