Hudson and Shires toss shutouts as Lady ‘Cats take two from Glenville State in softball action

BUCKHANNON – Hannah Hudson and Haylee Shires pitched a pair of complete-game shutouts for the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcats against the Glenville State Lady Pioneers here Wednesday evening in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader.

Hudson pitched the opener as the Lady ‘Cats won 8-0 in a five-inning contest while Shires pitched the nightcap in a 3-0 victory.

Heading into the games, the Lady Bobcats had the last 10 days off game-wise as their pair of weekend road doubleheaders against Urbana and Notre Dame were wiped out by the weather.

The well-rested Lady Bobcats made quick work of Glenville State in game one in just 75 minutes.

Lauren Niglio scored Celia Valencia on a fielder’s choice to treat the Lady Bobcats to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

Wesleyan turned to the long ball in the third inning as Kennedy Cowart hit a two-run shot and Lauryn King blasted a solo shot.

Valencia and Brooke Clark also had one-run singles in the inning as Wesleyan took a 6-0 lead.

Wesleyan ended the game in the bottom of the fifth on the mercy rule as Megan Magsamen tripled home Niglio and Miranda Frye singled home Magsamen to end the game.

Wesleyan outhit Glenville State by a 12-8 margin.

Niglio was a perfect three-for-three at the plate while Magsamen and Frye added two hits apiece.

Hudson improved her record to 6-4 as she scattered eight hits while walking one and fanning three.

Game two saw limited offense as the two teams combined for just three runs and nine hits.

Wesleyan took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Clark scored on an error by the Glenville State catcher after Cowart swiped second base.

Wesleyan made it a 2-0 game in the bottom of the third when Destiny Alvarado hit a sacrifice fly that scored Clark.

The Lady Bobcats added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Kiley Turner hit a solo home run.

Wesleyan had five hits in the contest with Clark leading the way with two.

Shires allowed just four hits as she improved to 4-7 on the season.

She walked one and struck out three.

The pair of losses dropped Glenville State to 9-21 overall and 2-10 in the MEC South Division.

Wesleyan improved to 11-13 overall and 4-6 in the MEC South.

The Lady ‘Cats will return to action this Saturday when they host the University of Charleston in a league doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
