Hot-shooting lifts Concord to MEC win over Lady ’Cats


BUCKHANNON — Concord raced out to a 26-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back on its way to an 88-68 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the Rockefeller Center.

The Lady Bobcats opened the game with a 4-0 lead, but the Mountain Lions scored the next 20 points and led the rest of the game.

Coach Vicky Bullett’s squad cut the margin to eight, at 30-22, in the second quarter when Abi Gabauer hit a jumper at the 5:51 mark, but Concord responded with a 17-5 run to close the half and build a 47-27 halftime lead.

The Mountain Lions (4-5, 2-4 MEC) shot a scorching 59 percent from the field in the game and had 25 assists on its 34 field goals. Madison May poured in 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting and added 11 rebounds and six assists. Riley Fitzwater, Danielle Catron and Lindsey Overbey each had 15 points.

Mari Stewart had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Wesleyan (4-4, 3-3 MEC). Katie Demi and Gabauer each added 11 points and Kiara Rodriguez netted 10. Tara Goldman had a game-high seven assists.

The Lady Bobcats only had nine turnovers but were plagued by a 30.9 percent shooting day from the floor, hitting just 25 of 81 of their attempts.

Wesleyan will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Seton Hill for a non-conference contest.
