Hobbs, Smithson go unbeaten for Bucs at Wheeling Park Duals

WHEELING – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Julius Hobbs and Jacob Smithson posted unbeaten records for the Buccaneers at the Wheeling Park Duals this past weekend.

Hobbs, competing in the 132-pound division, compiled an 8-0 record while Smithson, wrestling in the 170-pound division, went 7-0.

“Hobbs really dominated and controlled every match and Smithson wrestled extremely well the entire tournament,” stated Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jacob Orr.

As a team, the Bucs went 3-5 overall in the 40-team tournament.

“Again, it’s hard wining duals tournaments when we give up so many weight classes,” explained Orr. “We gave up five weight classes at this tournament forfeiting at 106, 113, 160, 182 and 195-pound weight classes. As a coach, I don’t focus on the dual team wins when we come to these tournaments. Our focus is on the individual matches and our goal is to control what we can control and take care of business in the matches we wrestle.”

The Bucs had three wrestlers go 6-2 at the tournament – Aidan Wilson (120 pounds), Nathan Cornett (126) and Breagan Pearson (145).

“Cornett had a great weekend as a freshman and one of Pearson’s losses was when I bumped him up in a weight class to complete,” noted Orr.

Alex Bennett (220) finished with a 4-4 mark, Luke Bohnsack (152) went 3-4 and Trevur Randolph (138) compiled a 3-5 mark.

“Bohnsack shows a tremendous amount of heart every time he steps on the mat,” explained Orr. “He gives up a lot of weight wrestling in a class above his normal weight. He never lets that stop him from leaving it all on the mat.”

In the heavyweight division, the duties were split between Todd Cutlip and freshman Joel Hershman after Cutlip fell ill the morning of the second day of competition.

Cutlip amassed a 2-2 record while Hershman went 1-3.

“We won a couple of key matches against regional opponents this past weekend,” concluded Orr. “It’s always good to find those tough match-ups so the guys have to struggle through matches, it gives us a good gauge of what we still need to work on.”

The Bucs will return to the mat today in a home quad with Preston, University and Fairmont Senior.

The match will start at 6 p.m.

“We invite everyone to come out and watch and support the team,” stated Orr.
