Hinkleville accident results in one death

HINKLEVILLE — One man is deceased and another sustained minor injury following an afternoon accident on Route 20 in Upshur County.

At approximately 1:31 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, Upshur County Sheriff’s Department, Buckhannon Fire Department, Adrian Volunteer Fire Department, Banks District Volunteer Fire Department and Upshur County EMS responded to a two vehicle accident at Hinkleville on Route 20.

When the departments arrived on scene, they found a head-on collision between a 2002 C Series flatbed truck and a 2005 Chevy Cobalt. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries, while the driver of the Cobalt required extraction by fire personnel. After being extracted, the driver of the cobalt was pronounced dead on scene.

Upshur County Sheriff’s Office released a statement on Monday, June 27, identifying the two individuals involved in the accident. According to the release, “Calvin Brake, of Rock Cave, was traveling North in a 2002 C Series flatbed truck and Brennen Phillips, of Crawford, was traveling South in a 2005 Chevy Cobalt. Subsequent investigation revealed that Phillips crossed the center line into the Northbound lane and struck Brake head on.”

The release also stated that, “Brake received minor injuries. Phillips had to be extracted from his vehicle by fire rescue personnel and was pronounced dead on scene.”

Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputy Dakota Linger is still investigating the accident. Any further details will be published following the completion of the investigation.
