Herron pitches Buccaneers past Huskies in Big 10 action, 10-1

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Tim Phillips takes a cut at a pitch coming in during their game Wednesday with Morgantown. The Bucs lost a 15-2 decision to Morgantown but rebounded to down North Marion Thursday, 10-1.

RACHEL – The Buckhannon-Upshur baseball Buccaneers were on both sides of the spectrum last week in a pair of games.

The Bucs lost a home outing to Morgantown by a 15-2 score in a five-inning game, but rebounded to go on the road and beat North Marion in a Big 10 battle by a 10-1 score as Andrew Herron pitched five innings of scoreless relief.

The split left head coach Adam Squires’ squad with a 3-5 record overall and a 1-3 record in the Big 10.

Against Morgantown, the Bucs scored first in the bottom of the first as Alek Seech scored on an error.

It was all Morgantown after that as the Mohigans scored two in the top of the second, one in the third and chased across nine runs in the top of the fourth for a 12-1 lead.

Logan Bailey doubled down the left field line to score Tim Phillips to make it a 12-2 contest for the Bucs.

Morgantown tacked on three more runs in the top of fifth as the game was called on the mercy rule.

B-U managed just five hits in the game with Bailey, Nick Calef-Boring, Casey Hamner, Andrew Herron and Phillips each getting one.

Bailey started the game and went 3 1/3 innings giving up 12 earned runs on 10 hits.

Things went better for the Bucs on Thursday at North Marion as they limited the Huskies to just one run on three hits.

B-U scored first when Hamner hit a two-run single and Bailey scored on a passed ball to stake the Bucs to a 3-0 lead.

North Marion scored their lone run in the bottom on the first on a sacrifice fly by Jace Rinehart.

The Bucs made it a 4-1 game in the top of the fourth when Seech drew a bases loaded walk that scored Logan Whitehair.

The Bucs put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth with a six-run outburst.

The Bucs loaded the bases for Ryan Smith who hit a two-run double, and after Whitehair was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, Bailey emptied the bases with a double to center field.

Seech kept the inning going with a one-run single that scored Bailey to give the Bucs their 10-1 lead.

B-U banged out 10 hits with Bailey, Seech, Hamner and Herron each getting two apiece.

Herron earned his first win of the season giving up just two hits and striking out five in his five innings of work.

The Bucs will return to action today visiting Grafton for a 5 p.m. clash and then stay on the road Tuesday for a 5 p.m. outing with Liberty.
