BUCKHANNON — While history has fostered many misconceptions about hemp, local business owner Thomas Thacker insists that there are endless ways it can help. Thacker recently opened Endo Solutions, a store and museum of sorts, where you can purchase products and learn about the many benefits hemp provides.
According to The Columbia History of the World, the oldest relic of human industry is a bit of hemp fabric dating back to approximately 8,000 BC. Fast forward to modern history, and Thacker explained that the hemp plant began to receive a substantial amount of stigma and scrutiny, especially within the past hundred years. The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 placed a tax on the sale of cannabis, which dramatically sparked the era of hemp prohibition. Understandably, Americans developed a biased thinking for something that was long ridiculed rather than researched.
Now, Buckhannon is fortunate to have an expert on the matter, as much research has indeed been done by the Endo Solutions founder. Thacker can be found at 236 S. Kanawha Street next to Skateland. He shares his passion and information through his store, by not only selling hemp products, but being humbly willing to elaborate on any questions that people may have concerning the substance and what it has to offer.
Thacker laughed as he stated, “We’ve had people stop in and ask, ‘You got any of the real stuff?’” He continued to clarify and stated, “This is the real stuff, but it doesn’t get you high. It takes your pain away. Since there has been so much stigma with cannabinoids, there’s been huge misconceptions on the topic at large.” Thacker explained, “It’s a learning process and I’m still learning as I go. It’s really been a big part of a lot of different cultures and societies. It’s also had its historical recognition here in the states, where it was actually a huge norm for some time for farmers to grow their hemp crops without demise.”
Thacker stated, “The most common stigma or concern, of course, for those unfamiliar with it, is does it get you high?” He was glad to clarify that it doesn’t. Thacker said Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a molecule found in the cannabis plant and the extracted medicinal component has beneficial health uses. He explained that CBD has been studied for a multitude of treatments, such as relieving chronic pain, reducing anxiety and depression, helping to reduce symptoms related to cancer and among much more.
“Fortunately, now we can have a small bit of THC, of course where it’s legal, but that small bit actually helps a lot of people even though it’s got to be less than 0.3%. For some, individuals will try their doses on a much broader spectrum, starting with almost zero percentage of THC and it does not help. But then they try the full spectrum and with just that little tiny bit makes a big difference,” Thacker stated. “There’s certainly a lot to it,” Thacker humorously added.
While Thacker wholeheartedly believes in the benefits of CBD products, he emphasized, “We’re not a pharmacy. We’re not a doctor’s office. Obviously, we can’t prescribe to anyone. We can’t say that any of these are going to help any disease, just as when you read on over the counter medicine bottles or with most supplementary products.” Thacker’s store contains an assortment of different CBD products like drops, oils, creams, lotions, tinctures, and even CBD products for pets. Thacker is very knowledgeable about his products and is proud of his hemp museum, where he can help explain to folks the benefits and remarkable qualities the hemp plant delivers, along with its vast history.
