Girl Scouts bring in the New Year with cookie sales

BUCKHANNON — The best time of the year, apart from Christmas, is just around the corner. Buckhannon’s local Girl Scout Troop, The Black Diamond Council, will begin cookie sales as 2021 finally begins.

Cookie sales start January 8 and all boxes will cost $5 this year. Girl Scouts now offer 8 varieties to choose from: Tagalongs, Samoas, Thin Mints, Do-Si-Dos, Trefoils, S’mores, Toffee-Tastics and Lemon-Ups.

As of right now, Upshur County has five troops, with 52 Girl Scouts altogether. Troops are organized within the local elementary schools at Union, Tennerton, Academy, French Creek and Rock Cave.

Jannie Hoover, Service Unit Administrator, explained, “Girls can take orders in person or over the phone with their Order Cards (customers place an order and pay for it when it is delivered). If the girls choose to, they can also set up a Digital Cookie Platform. They can personalize their own e-commerce site and invite friends and family to support them. If a customer chooses to order from her site, they will have two delivery options: in-person drop-off or direct shipment to their home. Either way, customers will pay online when they place an order.” Hoover added, “Instead of the traditional booth sales this year, we are encouraged to hold drive-thru booth sales. If a troop decides to have one, they will start in March.”

The main goal of the Cookie Program is to help Girl Scouts build five essential skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.

By purchasing cookies this year, you are not only doing yourself a favor—but you’re also helping local Girl Scout Troop members learn life skills and collect memories with their fellow scouts.
