Senior forward scores 25 as Lady Bucs overcome seven-point second-half deficit

TENNERTON – Senior forward Audrey Gaudet put her Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs on her shoulders and carried her team to a come-from-behind 56-54 victory over the East Fairmont Lady Bees in a Big 10 Conference battle Wednesday night.

With fellow senior Alli Robinson sidelined with an injury, Gaudet scored 25 points, had six steals and grabbed five rebounds.

With the Lady Bucs down by five, at 52-47, with 1:47 remaining, Brooklyn Maxwell fired in a 3-pointer to make it a 52-50 contest.

East Fairmont missed a short-range jumper with Gaudet getting the rebound and Leigh Ann Bennett worked the ball to Maxwell from the top of the key who scored on a lay-up to deadlock the game at 52-52 with 56 seconds left.

Gaudet had a steal on East Fairmont’s next possession and took it the length of the court for a lay-up to put Buckhannon-Upshur ahead 54-52 with 36 seconds remaining.

Gaudet then tipped the inbounds pass and grabbed it and fed a quick pass to Bennett for an easy lay-up as the Lady Bucs extended their lead to 56-52 with 29 seconds remaining.

McKinzie Kittle rejected an Avery Pack shot attempt but Pack got the rebound and put it in to make it a 56-54 game but East Fairmont only left themselves four seconds remaining in the game.

B-U inbounded the ball and ran out the clock for the two-point win.

“Audrey had a monster game for us,” Kittle said after the game. “She won the game for us at the end with her steals. She stepped up big with Alli not able to dress for us tonight.”

The game started out well enough for the Lady Bucs as they scored six straight after getting down by a 5-2 score.

Sydney Fletcher scored on a lay-up and Gaudet went inside twice during the 6-0 run.

A lay-up by Shelby McDaniels pushed the B-U to six, at 16-10 with 1:05 left in the opening quarter, but East Fairmont scored the final two baskets of the quarter to make it a 16-15 game

With B-U leading 18-17, East Fairmont went on a 12-6 run for a 29-24 lead with 40 seconds left in the first half.

The Lady Bees took a 31-26 advantage into the half.

B-U battled East Fairmont in the third quarter but was never able to take the lead.

A lay-up by Gaudet closed the score to 33-32 at the 5:16 mark, but East went on a 9-3 run to open up their biggest lead of the game at seven, at 42-35, with 2:45 remaining in the third quarter

Gaudet put in a lay-up and Maxwell nailed a jumper as B-U closed the contest to 42-39 heading into the final frame.

East Fairmont built their lead back to six, at 49-43, but McDaniels fired in a 3-pointer and Gaudet flipped in a free throw to make it a 49-47 contest.

Bartholow hit a trey to make it a 52-47 game before the Lady Bucs finished the game with their rally.

“We just couldn’t get over that mountain until the final part of the game,” remarked Kittle. “It seemed like we would get there and give up a big play to them. A win is a win though and we are happy to get this one. I am so proud of them. They never quit tonight and kept fighting.”

Following Gaudet in the scoring column was McDaniels who scored 13 and Maxwell who put in 12.

Bartholow led East Fairmont with 14 points while Pack had 12.

The loss dropped East Fairmont to 6-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big 10.

Buckhannon-Upshur improved to 8-5 overall and 5-2 in the Big 10.

The Lady Bucs will return to action tonight when they visit Robert C. Byrd in Clarksburg for a 7:30 p.m. conference outing.
