PARKERSBURG — The girls of the Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School wrestling team traveled to Parkersburg to compete in the second annual West Virginia Girl’s State Wrestling Championship tournament last Friday, February 12. As a team, the Little Lady Buccaneer wrestlers posted a strong performance, scoring 48 total points in the tournament to earn a third-place finish out of 22 competing teams.

Kayleigh Garrido (110-pound weight classification) medically defaulted during weigh-in and didn’t compete in the tournament. Haylee Woody (116) wrestled to a 1-3 record, good enough to record a fourth-place finish in a deep and competitive weight classification.

After an unbelievable 2021-22 season, Maya Garcia (121) led the Little Lady Bucs into states. Throughout the tournament, Garcia dominated her competition in route to compiling a flawless 4-0 record. Garcia has made it a habit of beating boys in her weight division, so last Friday’s tournament gave her the chance to show what she could do against exclusively female competition. No other competitor could match Garcia’s intensity and physicality as she marched her way into the state championship bout against Justice Anthony. Garcia overcame this challenge, as she has so many times before this season, capturing the WV Girl’s State Championship for the Little Lady Bucs in the 121-pound weight division.
