FARMINGTON — Wrestlers representing Buckhannon-Upshur High School traveled to Farmington this past Saturday, February 5 to compete in the Big 10 Conference Championship tournament hosted at the North Marion High School.
As a team, reigning Big 10 Conference Coach of the Year Jacob Orr’s Bucs finished the tournament as runners-up. 120-pound weight division’s #2-overall seed Liam Garcia and 145’s #1-overall seed Nathan Cornett won conference championships in their respective weight classifications, while Aidan Wilson (126), Andrew McDowell (138), Luke Bohnsack (152) and Trevur Randolph (170) all ended the tournament as conference runner-up with second-place finishes.
Individually, #3-seeded Nathaniel Tyson (106) took fourth place with a 2-2 overall record. Tyson’s performance was highlighted by 2 takedowns, 1 escape and 2 pins on his way to chipping in 12.5 team points. Tyson defeated Shafer (Preston) by fall in his first match of the evening before losing to #6 (AA) Hess (North Marion) by fall in his second match. Following the loss, Tyson rebounded by defeating Willett (East Fairmont) by fall before losing to #8 (AA) Willis (Fairmont Senior) by major decision.
#8 Ian Cornett (113) took fifth place with a 1-2 overall record. Cornett’s stats for the tournament included: 6 takedowns and 2 escapes on his way to adding 5.5 team points to the Bucs’ total. Cornett lost to #2 (AA) Carpentar (East Fairmont) by fall and Lowensberry (RCB) by decision before getting back on track and ending the tournament on a high note by defeating Hampton (Preston) by decision.
Garcia (120) won the Big Ten Conference championship with an undefeated 3-0 mark. His championship effort in the tournament was highlighted by 6 takedowns, 1 escape and 2 pins. Garcia’s earned 23 team points, finishing the tournament as the Bucs second leading scorer. Garcia claimed victory by defeating both Boram (Lewis County) and #8 (AA) Michalski (Fairmont Senior) by fall then overcoming his weight division’s #1-overall seed Morgan (Liberty/Harrison) by decision.
Wilson (126) earned Big Ten runner-up honors after posting a 2-1 record. Wilson recorded 1 takedown and 1 pin on his way to chipping in 18 team points. Wilson defeated Shaffer (Lincoln) by fall then defeated #3 Mitchell (Lewis County) by injury default which marked career victory #100 for Aidan. Wilson lost in the 126-pound final to #2 Jones (Fairmont Senior) by way of injury default.
#12 Brodee Kennedy (132) took fourth place in his division with a 2-2 record. Kennedy’s performance at the Big 10 Championship tournament was highlighted by 2 takedowns, 3 escapes, and 2 pins. Kennedy contributed 12.5 team points to the Bucs total. Kennedy defeated Garlits (Preston) by fall in his first match before losing to #1 Hess (North Marion) by fall. He rebounded from the loss by defeating Bartholow (East Fairmont) by fall before succumbing to Arnett (Bridgeport) by decision.
McDowell (138) ended the evening as Big 10 Conference runner-up with a 1-1 record. McDowell recorded 1 takedown and 1 pin on his way to chipping in 15 team points. McDowell defeated James (Lewis County) by fall before losing to #1 Hamilton (Fairmont Senior) by technical fall.
Cornett (145) won the Big 10 championship with a flawless 3-0 record. Cornett put together one of the best performances of his career, recording 3 takedowns, 1 escape and 2 pins adding a team-high 24 points to the Bucs total. Cornett earned his conference crown by defeating both Heldreth (Lincoln) and Horne (Grafton) via fall to advance to the finals in his division. In the finals, Cornett defeated #6 Armistead (Fairmont Senior) by major decision to finish the night with a conference championship.
Bohnsack (152) ended the tournament with Big 10 Conference runner-up honors with a 2-1 overall record. Bohnsack recorded 3 takedowns, 3 escapes and 1 pin on his way to chipping in 16 team points. Bohnsack defeated Marsh (East Fairmont) by fall and Michael (Fairmont Senior) by decision before losing to #4 (AA) Bush (Lewis County) by fall in the finals of the 152-pound classification.
#8 Trevor Miller-Waycaster (160) finished the trip to Farmington with a 1-2 record. His performance in one of the most tournament’s most competitive divisions was highlighted by 3 takedowns, 1 escape and 1 pin, adding in 2.5 team points.
Randolph (170) ended the night as the fourth Buc to claim Big 10 runner-up honors with a 2-1 record. Randolph’s tournament stats consisted of 2 takedowns and 2 pins on his way to adding 18 team points to the Bucs total. Randolph wrestled his way to the precipice of a conference championship by defeating both Hill (Bridgeport) and Parsons (Lewis County) by fall to advance to the 170-pound division finals. In the finals, Randoph lost to #7 (AA) Kruzel (Fairmont Senior) by technical fall.
#5 Oscar Blonn (182) took fifth place with a 1-2 overall record. Blonn recorded 4 takedowns, 1 escape and 1 fall on his way to chipping in 7.5 team points. Blonn started off the tournament with losses to Profitt (Lincoln) by fall and Mitchell (Grafton) by decision before defeating Bonner (East Fairmont) by fall in his last match of the tournament.
#9 Jeremiah Thompson (195) finished 0-2 to wrap up the individual results for the Bucs at the Big 10 Conference championship tournament.
