Freshmen Bucs edged by Bridgeport, 43-34

BRIDGEPORT – The Buckhannon-Upshur freshmen Buccaneers couldn’t overcome an early deficit and wound up dropping a 43-34 decision to Bridgeport Wednesday evening.

The Bucs fell behind by a 13-10 score in the first quarter and were forced to play catch-up the rest of the way.

In that first quarter, Zach Calef-Boring scored eight points, including two three-pointers, and Zade Woody added two for the Bucs.

The Bucs dropped the second quarter by a 16-10 margin as Shawn Blandino scored five points, Gage Raschella three and Zach Calef-Boring two.

That left the Bucs down by a 29-20 score at the intermission.

The Bucs managed just one field goal by Woody and one free throw by Ryan Snyder in the third quarter as they lost it by a 9-3 margin.

That left them down by a 38-23 score heading into the last stanza.

They won the final quarter by an 11-5 margin with Blandino going off for seven points, Snyder two and Woody two.

Blandino led the Bucs with 12 points while Calef-Boring scored 11.

Tucker Hewitt paced the Bridgeport offense with 14.

The Bucs are now 4-5 on the season.

Their upcoming contests with Braxton County and University were canceled.

They will return to the court Wednesday when they visit Elkins for a 4:30 p.m. start.
