Freshmen Buccaneers defeat Grafton, 42-38

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer freshmen basketball team jumped into an early lead against the Grafton Bearcats then had to hold off a rally for a 42-38 victory.

The Bucs led by 12 heading into the fourth quarter and held of the Bearcats for the four-point win.

Five different Bucs scored in the first quarter as they took an 11-4 lead.

Zach Calef-Boring nailed a trey and Gage Raschella, Zade Woody, Mark Hurst and Josh Nesbitt each dropped in a basket for the Bucs in the first quarter.

With Hurst scoring six points and Woody and Shawn Blandino each adding a basket, the Bucs won the second quarter by a 10-9 margin.

They led going into the half by a 21-13 score.

Calef-Boring had four points and Rachella, Woody and Blandino two each as the Bucs took the third quarter by a 10-6 gap.

That gave them a 31-19 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Bucs were outscored in the final quarter by a 19-11 margin.

Raschella scored four points while Hurst added three and Blandino and Nesbitt two each for the Bucs in the final period.

Hurst led the Bucs with 11 points while Raschella had eight.

J. T. Veltri had a game-high 19 points for Grafton.

The Bucs improved to 3-1 on the season.

They will return to action Monday when they host Elkins at 4:30 p.m.
