Four home runs power Lady ‘Cats past Concord in game one of a MEC softball doubleheader

ATHENS – Four home runs powered the West Virginia Wesleyan Lady Bobcat softball team past the Concord Lady Mountain Lions here Saturday afternoon in game one of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader.

Lauryn King crushed two home runs while Brooke Clark and Destiny Alvarado each had one as Wesleyan cruised to a 7-0 victory in the opener.

The four home runs accounted for six of the seven Lady Bobcat runs.

Unfortunately for the Lady ‘Cats, they couldn’t find that same magic in game two and dropped a 2-1 decision.

In game one, Wesleyan used the long ball early as Clark hit a solo home and King followed with a two-run blast to give the Lady ‘Cats a 3-0 lead.

Wesleyan tacked on three more in the top of the second behind Alvarado’s solo blast and Kings second home run, a two-run shot.

That put Wesleyan up, 6-0.

Wesleyan tacked on one more in the top of the seventh when Lauren Niglio singled up the middle scoring King.

Wesleyan muscled out 13 hits with Kennedy Cowart and King each getting three.

Hannah Hudson picked up the win in the circle in a complete game effort to improve her mark to 5-3.

She scattered eight hits in the shutout win while walking three and striking out five.

Game two saw the two teams combine for just eight hits, four apiece, while making a combined six errors in which both squads made three each.

Kylie Kent gave Concord a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when she singled down the left field line scoring Jenna Witt.

Concord made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth when Amber Stokes scored on a Wesleyan error.

Wesleyan’s lone run came in the top of the fifth when Brooke Clark hit a sacrifice fly that scored pinch runner Paije Bragg.

Wesleyan put runners on at first and second in the top of the seventh but were unable to get a run across to tie the game.

Alvarado, Cowart, King and Calia Valencia each had a hit in the loss.

Haylee Shires pitched well for Wesleyan in the loss.

She went the distance and gave up just one earned run on four hits and fanned one.

The split left Wesleyan a 9-11 mark overall and a 2-4 MEC record.

Concord is now 14-9 overall and 4-2 league ledger.

Wesleyan was scheduled to stay on the road Sunday for a conference doubleheader with UVa.-Wise.

The Lady ‘Cats will return to action Saturday when they visit Notre Dame College for a league twin bill starting at 1 p.m.
