BUCKHANNON – Week one was a perfect example of why we decided not to play the 2020 Fearless Football Forecast contest this season.
Going to press, I picked five games for Shea Phillips and I to select. By the time Friday night actually rolled around, we were down to just two games because of the COVD-19 pandemic.
So both Shea and I went 1-1 last week, and technically, Lewis County earned a forfeit win over Braxton County because they simply didn’t have enough players with enough practices to play because of the pandemic, so I am going to say we are 2-1 on the season.
B-U head coach Duane Stoeckle had it right when I spoke with him this week…looking at a map each day to see if you are going to play football is one of the craziest things I have ever seen. I mean, I get it, I totally do, but could you imagine going back to 2019 and telling yourself that a map will decide if you play football or not in 2020? Crazy times indeed.
Well, anyway, Shea and I are bringing you five more games this week, hopefully all five will get played.
Philip Barbour (0-1) at Buckhannon-Upshur (0-1)
Both teams were shutout last week and suffered bad opening-day losses. I do think the Bucs played better than the final score against Ripley. Time for the Bucs to get that first win of the season.
Duane: Buckhannon-Upshur 21-14; Shea: Buckhannon-Upshur: 21-20.
Musselman (1-0) at Martinsburg (0-0)
This game appears to be on at press time. Martinsburg was shut down for a few weeks due to the virus, so it will be interesting to see how they respond. Musselman is coming off of a 49-6 win over Jefferson last week. If there is one thing I have learned over the last few years of watching high school football is never pick against Martinsburg, under any circumstances.
Duane: Martinsburg, 35-23; Shea: Martinsburg, 42-21.
Lewis County (1-0) at Elkins (0-1)
The game says at Elkins but I assume it will be played at Lewis County since Wimer Field is closed. As I stated before, Lewis is 1-0 despite not playing as they earned a forfeit win over Braxton last week. Elkins lost a 35-12 decision to Robert C. Byrd last week. Lewis County should pick up the win this week.
Duane: Lewis County, 30-20; Shea: Elkins, 14-13.
East Fairmont (0-1) at Robert C. Byrd (1-0)
The Bees are reeling after a 20-0 loss to Grafton last week. Look for the Eagles to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Duane: Robert C. Byrd, 35-13; Shea: Robert C. Byrd, 35-28.
Eastern Kentucky (0-1) at West Virginia (0-0)
EKU lost their opener to opener to Marshall by a 59-0 score last Saturday. WVU should roll in the opener.
Duane: WVU, 48-7; Shea: WVU, 45-7.
