Forbrick drives in nine runs as Wesleyan downs Yellow Jackets in second game of doubleheader


BUCKHANNON –Eric Forbrick hit two home runs including a grand slam and drove in an incredible nine runs in the second game of a doubleheader with West Virginia State in a 15-7 victory for the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats in Mountain East Conference action at Hank Ellis Field.

The win ended a 10-game losing streak for the Bobcats.

In game one, the ‘Cats dropped an 8-4 decision.

The split left the Bobcats with a 15-25 record overall and an 8-14 mark in the MEC heading into Saturday’s doubleheader with West Virginia State..

In the second game, Wesleyan stormed out a 6-0 lead after one inning of play.

Forbrick blasted a three-run home run, Nick Grotti followed with a solo shot and Bryson Fluke hit a two-run single.

West Virginia State scored three times in the top of the second but Wesleyan countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning behind a one-run double by Forbrick and a ground out RBI from Josh Petit.

Wesleyan tacked on two more in the bottom of the third when Forbrick hit a one-run single and Grotti blasted a one-run double.

That treated Wesleyan to an 10-3 lead.

The Yellow Jackets scored four times in the top of the fifth to close it to an 10-7 game but Wesleyan answered with four runs of their own in the bottom of fifth as Forbrick crushed a pitch to left field clearing the bases with a grand slam home run.

Grotti wrapped up the scoring with a one-run single in the bottom of the sixth.

Wesleyan’s offense collected 16 hits with Forbrick and Grotti each getting four apiece while Fluke was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.

Dominic Castello (4-3) earned the win pitching three innings of relief.

He didn’t allow an earned run on three hits while striking out four.

In game one, the Bobcats fell behind by a 3-0 score after one-inning of play.

They chipped away at the lead scoring a run in each of the next four innings.

In the bottom of the second, Greg Smith hit a one-run single and in the bottom of the third Grotti smacked a one-run single to make it a 3-2 contest.

In the fourth, Smith hit a single to center field that scored Forbrick and made it a 3-3 game and Wesleyan took their first lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Grotti single that scored Castello at 4-3.

West Virginia State took the lead back at 7-4 with a four-run sixth inning and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the 8-4 win.

Smith paced Wesleyan’s eight-hit attack with three hits while Grotti had two.

Hunter Rotarius (1-5) started the game and suffered the loss.

He went 5 2/3 innings giving up six earned runs on eight hits while striking out one.

Wesleyan will return to the diamond Saturday when they visit UVa.-Wise for a MEC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

The two teams will meet again Sunday for another conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
