CLARKSBURG – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School Little Bucs ran just 17 offensive plays in their contest with Mountaineer Middle School here Thursday evening.
Let’s just say the Little Bucs made the most of those 17 plays in a 45-14 romp over Mountaineer.
Buckhannon-Upshur racked up 337 yards in those 17 plays, averaging just under 20 yards per play.
“We executed, got on our blocks and stayed on our blocks and didn’t make any stupid penalties or mistakes on offense,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School coach Dave Chipps. “I thought our offensive line pushed them down the field and backs ran well. That was the biggest part of our win.”
The Little Bucs wasted little time in getting on the board as Liam Garcia went over the right corner for a 57-yard scoring dash on the second play of the game.
Ian Strader found Bryson Johnston open in the end zone for the conversion pass to stake the Little Bucs to an 8-0 lead with just 49 seconds gone from the clock.
Mountaineer countered with an 11-play march that went 63 yards on their first series and scored on a Hunter Davisson eight-yard run.
The conversion pass failed as the Little Bucs still led, 8-6.
Following the kick-off that Garcia returned the Mountaineer 39, the Bucs found pay dirt again, this time it took just one play.
Johnston took the hand-off and scampered 39 yards untouched to the end zone for the score with 1:20 left in the opening quarter.
The conversion pass failed, but the Little Bucs still led, 14-6.
Mountaineer went for a fake punt on their next series which failed as the Little Bucs took over at the visitors 40-yard line.
It took Buckhannon-Upshur four plays to score this time as Johnston found the end zone again, this time on a eight-yard run with 6:30 left in the second quarter.
Strader found Johnston in the end zone again on the conversion as the Little Bucs upped their lead to 22-6.
They held onto that lead at the break.
Mountaineer scored on the first play of the second half, a 71-yard run by Davisson with 19 seconds ticked-off the second half clock.
Davisson ran in the two-point conversion making it a 22-14 contest.
The Little Buc offense went right back to work with a five-play, 64-yard drive that was capped by Johnston’s third score of the game, an 11-yad run over the left side.
Garcia went untouched on the two-point conversion run as the Little Bucs took a 30-14 lead with 5:28 left in the third quarter.
The Little Buc defense held Mountaineer at the B-U 30-yard line on their next series, and found the end zone in two plays.
Garica kept it for a 42-yard run and Luke Yardley went up the middle for a 28-yard run to finish the drive with 53 seconds remaining in the third.
Strader’s two-point conversion pass was good to Yardley as the Little Bucs went up 38-14.
Tim Swift recovered a Mountaineer fumble at the 50-yard line to set up the Little Bucs’ final score.
It was a five-play drive that ended with a Drake Davis 10-yard run around the left corner.
Johnston botted home the extra-point kick as the Little Bucs took their 45-14 lead.
Garcia paced the offense with 126 yards and a score on just four carries while Johnston picked up 92 yards and three touchdowns on six carries.
Yardley added 55 yard and a touchdown on three totes while Davis had 28 yards and a score on two carries.
The Little Bucs didn’t attempt a pass in the game.
Mountaineer ended the game with 248 yards of total offense getting 191 on the ground and 57 through the air.
Davisson paced the Mountaineer offense with 153 yard on 13 carries.
“Defensively, we still have to do a better job of tackling,” stated Chipps. “I don’t know how many tackles we missed in their backfield. It’s still a work in progress. We will clean it up.”
The Little Bucs will return to action Wednesday when they visit South Harrison for a 6:30 p.m. kick-off.
