TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School football Little Bucs are ready to start their season Thursday night when they host Elkins at 6:30 p.m. at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.
To fine tune things, the Little Bucs hosted Tucker Valley last Wednesday in a scrimmage at the middle school.
Veteran head coach Dave Chipps saw some good and bad from his Little Bucs in the scrimmage.
“We scored four touchdowns in our first 20 offensive plays,” noted Chipps. “Liam Garcia had all four touchdowns. I thought our offense and the line did a good job of executing our plays.”
Chipps wasn’t quite as pleased with the team’s defensive effort despite the first team shutting out Tucker Valley.
“We made too many mental mistakes,” said Chipps. “We still have some work to on defense because I feel we are behind in many areas.”
Chipps said Tucker Valley presented a solid test for his Little Bucs.
“I thought they were a good test,” stated Chipps. They had decent size and it was nice to be able to go out and hit some one else. Overall, I thought we did fine.”
The Little Buc offense will be spearheaded by Garcia from his tailback position while Ian Strader will be under center at quarterback.
Daren Daugherty will anchor the offensive line. “He just keeps getting better and better,” remarked Chipps about Daugherty.
Following their home opener Thursday, the Little Bucs will visit Mountaineer Middle at 6:30 p.m.
“We are excited to get the season underway,” concluded Chipps.
