Football ‘Cats open 2021 season with 45-3 loss to FCS Drake


DES MOINES (Iowa) – Playing up a division against FCS opponent Drake, it was expected that the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats would have a tough season opener on their hands.

Drake raced out to a 45-0 lead after three quarters and wound up dropping the ‘Cats by a 45-3 score.

Wesleyan managed just 179 yards off offense (43 on the ground and 136 yard passing) while Drake racked up 529 yards of offense.

Mason Brubeck was the leading rusher for Wesleyan with 31 yards on eight carries.

True freshman Nathan Payne, making his first career start at quarterback for Wesleyan, completed nine of his 26 passes for 129 yards and was picked off once.

Freshman Dariuse Cooper was the leading receiver for Wesleyan with three catches for 52 yards.

Cameron Lomax had a monster day for the Bobcat defense with 11 total tackles.

Drake had a 21-0 lead after one quarter of play and led 35-0 at the break.

They owned a 45-0 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Wesleyan’s lone points came off the foot of freshman kicker Liam Depp who booted a 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter with 10:57 remaining.

The ‘Cats will return home for their next encounter next Saturday as they host Mountain East Conference foe UNC Pembroke.

Kickoff is set for noon.
