Landon McLean (82) and Luke Yardley (32) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers team up to bring down Greenbrier East’s Monquelle Davis (11) during their clash Friday night at Freal “Red’ Crites Memorial Stadium. The Bucs dropped a 55-10 decision to the Spartans.

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur football Buccaneers came out swinging against the Greenbrier East Spartans and scored the game’s first points, but they weren’t able to keep that momentum going as they dropped a 55-10 decision to the Spartans Friday night in a non-conference battle at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Field.

The Bucs won the coin toss and elected to receive the ball.

Starting at their own 31-yard line, the Bucs went 69 yards in six plays to find the end zone.

The big play of the drive was a 34-yard run from Elijah Bryant and quarterback Ian Donnen capped off the drive with a one-yard run with 9:14 remaining in the opening quarter.

Cameron Zuliani was true on her extra-point kick as the Bucs took a 7-0 lead.

It took Greenbrier East just four plays to score with a drive starting from their own 45-yard line.

Colby Piner took it in from a yard-out with 7:46 left in the first quarter.

The B-U defense stopped Greenbrier East’s conversion run as they still led the game by a 7-6 margin.

The Bucs were forced to punt on their next possession and the Spartans scored just two plays later as Quentin Wilson reeled off a 62-yard touchdown run with 5:40 still go in the opening quarter.

Piner’s two-point conversion run was good as the Spartans took a 14-7 lead and momentum away from the Bucs.

After forcing the Bucs into another punt, the Spartans went 75 yards in eight plays for their third touchdown of the opening quarter, a seven-yard run by quarterback Monquelle Davis.

Noah Davis was good on his extra-point kick as Greenbrier East took a 21-7 lead.

Greenbrier East put two more touchdowns on the board early in the second quarter as Piner ran in scores of 35 and four yards as the Spartans extended their lead to 34-7.

The Bucs were able to get on the scoreboard on their next drive aided by a 30-yard pass and catch between Donnen and Sterlin Thropp.

That set up a 35-yard field goal attempt that Zuliani booted right through the uprights making it a 34-10 contest with 3:12 remaining in the second quarter.

Greenbrier East added one more score before the half when Davis hit Trey Pondexter for a 11-yard touchdown pass making it a 41-10 game.

The Spartans put up two more touchdowns in the third quarter, a 10-yard run by Davis and a 32-yard fumble return by Jared Schoffner.

Greenbrier East racked up 560 yards of total offense compared to the Bucs 123.

B-U gained 93 yards on the ground and 30 through the air.

Greenbrier East improved to 3-1 on the season and will host Mingo Central next Friday.

The Bucs dropped to 1-3 on the season and will travel to Moundsville where they will play John Marshall next Friday at 7 p.m.

John Marshall will enter the game with a 3-1 record after beating Parkersburg South by a 39-0 score Friday night.
