Have you ever had a God Wink? Think about a special time when you just happened to be in a place where you made a difference in the life or lives of those you did not know. Do you think it was a coincidence? Did something happen that made you feel if you had not been there the outcome would be different? Do you believe in coincidences? What is a coincidence? A coincidence is a remarkable concurrence of events, ideas or what may seem a mere chance that you happen to be in the right or wrong place at a certain time. I have read a series of books called God Winks which are stories that make you wonder how events take place and certain things happen that one would never believe could happen.
Squire Rushnell has written several God Wink books with stories that make one believe that there are no coincidences. God speaks to us through what we think are coincidences which is just by chance. I pulled out one of the God Wink books titled “When God Winks at You”. The stories in this book will open your heart and mind to the possibility that God does speak to us in many ways. He brings people together who you would never think possible. God winks are personal. God winks give hope and assurance. God winks on comfort. God winks on answered and unanswered prayer. God winks just in the right place at the right time. God winks at families. God winks are special ways to show us that God is real. Some God winks come with a phone call from someone you think about, but you have lost contact with them. Out of the blue, the phone rings and your friend says hello. Some God winks happen when you are in trouble. Suddenly, someone shows up to help you. Think about all the animals you see on Facebook who are in dire trouble and someone comes along just at the right time to save them. Have you ever come very close to having an accident and you just seem to miss getting hit by a car? Or, you miss falling on that ice because someone comes along to stop you from getting hurt. Those are God winks. God loves us and finds ways to show us His love through many avenues that we do not realize.
One of my favorite God Wink stories is about Emmett Kelly who was the world- famous clown who never smiled. This story says it all. Emmett Kelly passed away and his daughter was boarding a plane to attend his funeral. She held a picture of her smiling father that was taken many years ago when he found out that he had a baby girl. This picture was taken by a UPI photographer and was seen all over the world. This was the only smiling picture taken of Emmitt Kelley. As his daughter sat down in her seat on the plane she began to cry. There was a gentleman seated next to her and he asked if he could help her. She told him that she was flying to the funeral of her father, Emmitt Kelley, who had passed away that morning. She showed the gentleman the picture of her dad smiling. She told the gentleman that this was the only picture of her dad smiling. The gentleman was stunned. The gentleman, Frank Beatty, looked at her and told her that he was the man who took the picture of her father. Emmitt’s daughter felt a peace come over her and she knew that her father and a God wink had come to her by meeting Frank Beatty. The two became friends and Mr. Beatty took pictures of her wedding five years later. This story shows how God winks make a difference in our lives and the lives of others.
Take a minute and think of a time you had something strange happen and felt you were in the wrong place or the right place for this occurrence. Were you in trouble and someone just happened to come along and help you? Have you ever felt that you needed to make a decision on something and then found out that someone happened along and helped you make the right decision? Look back on your life and remember the paths you took to get to your selected destination. Did your decisions help you get to your destination when you expected or did your decisions take you in a different direction that put you on a new path? We usually do not sit back and think of how our life takes turns and pauses to get us where we are supposed to be. You might think everything is by chance. Could God Winks have made a difference in where you have traveled?
The next time you are surprised with what you consider a coincidence, say a little prayer of thanks that God is watching over you and gives you special winks in a variety of unique situations. You may be the one God chooses to make that God wink special for someone you know or someone you meet. Your God wink may come through a situation that gives you the opportunity to make a difference in the life of someone who will not survive without your being in the right place at the right time. As you are out and about, always remember that God is with you and wants what is best for you. God will place you in the right place at the right time to help you or to serve someone else.
The God Wink books are a joy to read and I would recommend them to all who want to increase their understanding of what is a coincidence and what just might be a God Wink to make our lives more interesting with the situations we face. Let us take time to enjoy life and never underestimate how a God Wink might be used to keep us safe, to enrich our lives, or to be of service in the lives of others.
I leave you with these thoughts: “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” – Proverbs 16:9. “Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out.” – John Wooden
