Focus: Spring and Summer of 2020

Everyone looks forward to Spring when everything is new, fresh, warm, beauty in nature and hope for family togetherness. Spring and summer bring outings, trips, visiting with relatives and just having fun with the break from the cold of winter.  Think back to February and remember all the spring plans you had:  painting, cleaning out closets, going to or having a yard sale, picnics, swimming, fishing and just hanging out with family and friends.  This spring was totally different than the springs we have celebrated in the past.  We were faced with a new virus that totally changed our way of life.  Schools were closed, we were asked to stay home, to wear masks when we were out of our homes and we were asked to refrain from visiting neighbors and our elderly families. This pandemic from China was called the coronavirus and it was spread worldwide.  Many family members who were in school in other countries could not come home and students from other countries could not leave this country.  There was much information on this pandemic, but no one knew exactly how it was spread, where it began and how long it would be with us.  We were told that if we followed special guidelines it would die down and hopefully go away.  Many of our eldest in nursing homes were stricken and died.  Mistakes were made in almost every state, which made the virus stay with us and attack more people.

The one good thing during the virus was the outpouring of health care workers, doctors, nurses and organizations who stepped up to help take care of the thousands of people struck by the virus.  The truckers and food stores kept moving forward to make sure the food and supplies needed were delivered.  Neighbors helped neighbors and that was the special part of this new adventure into spring.  The virus started to subside in many states, and everyone felt some relief.  However, when states began to open back to some normal routines, protests began over the deaths of several black folks and the death of another black man who was killed by a policeman.  These deaths were wrongfully committed.  Protesters began to fill the streets protesting the wrongful deaths.  In America, we have the freedom of speech to protest.  Many of the protesters marched without masks and then the protesters were infiltrated by those who were determined to destroy what is good in America.   As this destruction was going on, thousands were on our streets and no thought was taken about the virus moving through America.  Not only did the destruction continue, our men and women police enforcement were attacked. Protests are allowed. Those who are destroying property, burning buildings, killing police and beating those who work in their businesses are to be arrested.  Where were our leaders?  Why were those arrested released?  Then those involved in the destruction decided to take down the statues and special displays of men and women of America’s history.  I never thought I would see the day when such anger did so much damage to the America that has brought us freedom to live, work, have families, to worship as we choose and to be free to speak our minds.  If this destruction is allowed to continue, we will lose the America we have known to be so special.  America gives us the right to speak out. The laws of America do not condone the destruction, killing and violence that we still see in our towns.  If this violence continues, our country will be changed forever.

We are now in July, the middle of summer, and the destruction continues.  Not only has the destruction of our cities continued but the virus has come back full force.  Almost every state has had their virus totals rising.  Why are we not following directions to wear masks out in the public?  Did you know that there are groups who try to catch the virus as a game?  Just this week, a younger man died because he didn’t think it would happen to him when taking a chance to see if he could get the virus. What about all those coming and going to the beach?  They may be unknowingly spreading it around and may bring the virus to their moms, dads and grandparents. What will it take for people to decide to listen to the advice of those who know how the virus spreads?  Is it fair for someone who follows the rules to make a trip to the grocery store wearing a mask and pick up the virus from someone who refuses to wear a mask? If the protesters had not gathered, if the thousands had not decided to destroy America and each one of us had decided to pay more attention to the rules of this pandemic, would we now have such great numbers in almost every state?

With the end of summer, there is a question of opening our schools in the late summer or early fall.  Is this virus going to rule the rest of our lives for summer, fall, and into winter?  Will the virus be here next spring?  With everything our country has been through in the last several months, our citizens have become fearful. What about school for our children? What about trips that folks have planned?  What about the businesses that have had to close due to the virus?  What about the businesses destroyed by those who wish to take down our country?  What about all of our elderly who are afraid to leave their homes?  What about those in senior nursing homes and retirement homes?  What about the continuing spread of the coronavirus?  What about our churches?  What about our neighbors?  What happens next?  We are living in a time when America is shaking.  Will our nation be destroyed by those who are full of hate for America?  Will those who love America stand up and say enough is enough?  Will our nation survive this shaking?  Will our nation be totally changed for the future?  These are questions many are asking.  How did this happen?  Will America be a nation run by those who want the total power over the people, or will America be One nation under God with Liberty and Justice for All? Will our preamble still say our nation is Of the people, By the people and For the people, or will the people have to answer to those ruling our nation with laws of power by a few people, no voice by the people and no choices for the people.  Folks, it is time to think how you wish to continue living in America.  You have a choice.  You still have the right to vote who you wish to lead America, how you wish to live in America and if you want to have One Nation Under God.  The freedom of the America that we know, gives you that right.

Autumn is just around the corner.  Will the virus still be controlling our lives? We need to pray for those who have the virus.  We need to pray for those who are deciding when and if our children will attend school. Will those who want to destroy the America we know and love be allowed to continue tearing down our towns, removing the history that has taken hundreds of years to build, doing away with the safety our law enforcement officers provide and continue killing our children and members of the families we love? We need to pray for our leaders to make sound decisions.  We need to pray for those in law enforcement.  Will the changes we have seen continue till we do not recognize the America we love?  We need to pray for America.  We need to pray for our freedom to live, work, worship and have the right to speak out in the country we live in.  We need to pray for justice to be served to those who continue to kill our children and those that continue the destruction of our cities.  America is at a crossroads and the decision of how America will move forward will soon be reached.  May Peace, Love, Faith, Hope and Prayer give us the right choice.

I leave you with these thoughts.  “Sometimes history takes things into its own hands.” Thurgood Marshall, U.S. Supreme Court justice (1908-1993)

“Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere.”  Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Freedom is the recognition that no single person, no single authority or government has a monopoly on truth, but that every one of us put in the world has been put here for a reason and has something to offer.”  President Ronald Reagan

I know God has a plan.  I pray for direction to follow it, patience to wait on it, and knowledge to know when it comes.

2 Chronicles 7:14   “ If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
