WELLSBURG — Five Buckhannon-Upshur High School wrestlers earned spots in the upcoming state tournament at Saturday’s Class AAA, Region 1 Championships held at Brooke High School.
The Bucs of head coach Jacob Orr placed sixth at regionals with 110 points. They had three wrestlers capture titles, one runner-up, one third-place finisher, one fifth and one sixth.
Wheeling Park racked up 210 points to take top team honors, followed by University (191.50), John Marshall (169), Preston (133.50), Brooke (123), B-U and Morgantown (78).
Freshman Julius Hobbs, junior Tyler Cutright
Hobbs, wrestling at 113, improved to 29-12 with his 2-0 effort at regionals.
He pinned Morgantown’s Cam Lawrence in his opening match and earned a
Cutright, who qualified for his third straight state meet, pinned Preston’s Hunter Bishop then earned a 3-2 decision over Wheeling Park’s Stevie Mitchell at 138.
Cutright is now 38-5 on the season.
At 145, Smithson (37-6) earned a

The freshman defeated John Marshall’s Dakota Bonds in his opening match and edged Preston’s Bailey Radabaugh, 5-4, in the consolation finals.
Placing fifth for the Bucs was senior Khalil Jackson (195), while sophomore Riley Lantz was sixth at 170.
The state tournament is scheduled to take place Feb. 22-24 at Huntington’s Big Sandy Superstore Arena.
