Fast start lifts B-U freshmen to 44-38 win over Colts

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur freshman Buccaneers built a huge halftime and then had to hold off a determined Philip Barbour Colt team in the second half for a 44-38 victory Thursday night at the high school gym.

The Bucs were their own worst enemy in the fourth quarter in not being able to put away the Colts as they went just eight-for-19 from the free throw in the last eight minutes of action and only 13-for-32 for the game at the line.

The Bucs exploded out of the gates taking a 17-5 lead after one quarter of play behind Nathaniel Ringer’s seven points, Jaden Westfall’s four, Ian Strader’s three and Dom English’s three.

The Bucs extended their lead in the second quarter winning it by an 11-7 margin as Westfall and Malaki Williams each had four points, Eli Mahaffey two and English one.

That gave B-U a 28-12 lead at the break.

The Bucs managed just four points in the third quarter getting a basket from Westfall and a free throw from Williams and Blake Ruynon as they saw their lead dwindle to 11, at 32-21, going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter went to Philip Barbour by a 17-12 score, but the Bucs held on for the win.

Ringer had four points, English and Ryan Kelley three each and Williams two for the Bucs in the final quarter.

Ringer led the Bucs with 11 points while Westfall had 10.

Clint Auvil led Philip Barbour with nine.

The win improved the Bucs to 3-3 on the season.

They were slated to play Bridgeport on Friday and will visit Lewis County on Wednesday.
