Fans, racers brave weather for weekend of dirt-track action

KERENS — Early Saturday, the races were in doubt of being ran as normally scheduled, as signs of rain filled the skies. However, as the storm front cleared later in the day, allowing the track to dry, the call to run the races was made. Dark clouds and rain could not deter the crowds from coming out and supporting their favorite drivers in a regular season racing at the Elkins Raceway on July 9. As the green flag waved, started the conditions on the track were ideal, setting the drivers up with another opportunity to do what they love and prove themselves on the track.

In the Super Lates division, both Shane and Logan Hitt picked up wins in the 10-lap heats, before Billy Holbert took the 30-lap Featured race win. Later in the Crates division, Lucas McDonald and Kyle Lukon traded wins in the first two 8-lap heats before AJ Spanuolo stole the show with a win in the 25-lap Featured race.

Mitch Thomas shined in the early goings of the Modified division races, winning the first heat. However, it was Phil Jeffries who ultimately won the day, after winning the second heat before delivering a dominating performance behind the wheel in the 20-lap featured race.

While Kevin Keene and Dustin Atkinson each picking a 6-lap heat win each, it was Jason Ammons who found himself in victory lane, following a thrilling race to the finish in the 15-lap Main Event for the Street Stock division.

Santino Loretta was in the zone Saturday night, dominating the field by winning both the first 6-lap heat and the 15-lap Featured race in the Hot Mods division. Loretta’s dominance was only broken up when Josh Mullenax earned a win in the second heat, a run in which Loretta did not compete.

Racing fans can come out and watch the dirt-track racing action this coming Saturday, July 16, at Kerans’ Elkins Raceway. With Summer season quickly passing by, each weekend the races mean a little more. The races will only keep picking up in intensity with each green and checkered flag.
