Evelyn M. Tonkin, 91, of Buckhannon, WV passed away peacefully on June 17, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Henry Maurice Ours and (Mary Mona) Grace (Simon) Ours.
After graduating from BUHS in 1944, Evelyn lived for many years in Baltimore, MD, where she worked primarily as a telephone operator, but also as a baton twirler, Redskinette (original name of the Washington Redskins cheerleaders), and USO entertainer. In the late 1960’s, she moved back to Buckhannon and began a long career as a typesetter for Moore Business Forms, also giving baton twirling lessons in the evenings. Several years after retiring from Moore in 1990, she went back to work and became a Foster Grandparent at the WVWC Child Development Center, a job she dearly loved.
Evelyn was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church and also of the Buckhannon Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. For many years, she was very active in the Strawberry Festival, and in the 1970’s, she began the pageant that would become the children’s Junior Royalty Pageant, still held annually.
Evelyn was instrumental in starting a group for Moore retirees. As this group meant a lot to her, she served as its secretary for an extensive time until just a couple of years ago.
She is remembered for her kindness and compassion toward animals as well as people, having volunteered at times with the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility, to which she donated her birthday as a fundraiser for several years.
In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her two sisters (Norma Jean Ours and Juanita Grace Ours Hodges), her brother (Robert Maurice Ours), her sister-in-law (Ann Jeffry Montague Ours), and her brother-in-law (Judson James Hodges). She is survived by her daughter, two nieces, one nephew, and three cats. Evelyn’s body was donated to the WVU Human Gift Registry. Memorial arrangements will be made at a later time.
