TENNERTON — Cameron Ervin rushed for 178 yards and scored four touchdowns as Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School opened the season with a 32-20 win over Elkins Thursday night at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.
The Little Bucs piled up 332 yards of total offense, all on the ground, and found the end zone three times in the third quarter to take control after leading by just two, 14-12, at the intermission.
B-UMS got on the board on its first possession of the season when Ervin broke loose on the fourth play from scrimmage for a 49-yard score. The two-point conversion run failed, leaving the score 6-0.
The Little Bucs then recovered an onside kick but were forced to punt after just three plays.
Jay Crockett scooped up the punt for the Hornets and raced 60 yards for the score to tie the game at 6-6 after the failed conversion run.
Crockett, the starting quarterback, didn’t play in the second half after injuring his ankle in the second quarter.
B-UMS found the end zone again before the first quarter ended when Ervin rambled in from 42 yards out and Sterlin Thropp ran in the conversion to make it 14-6 with :40 left in the canto.
Taking over at its own 31, Elkins put together a seven play drive to find paydirt with 4:26 left in the first half when backup quarterback Charlie Smoak connected with Isavir Sweeney from 16 yards out. The conversion run failed.
After forcing the Hornets to punt on the first possession of the second half, Ervin scored his third touchdown of the night on the first play from scrimmage, this one from 32 yards out. The two-point run failed, leaving the score 20-12 with 6:15 left in the third quarter.
Another punt by the visitors allowed Ervin to score his fourth and final TD of the night when he trotted in from 16 yards out to extend the lead to 26-12, with the two-point run again no good.
The Little Bucs final score of the night came with :16 left in the third quarter on a 58-yard run by Nate Perry. The two-point pass failed, keeping the score at 32-12.
EMS added a TD late in the fourth quarter when Smoak scored from 20 yards out and Sweeney ran in the conversion.
Perry added 83 yards rushing on just six totes for B-UMS, which didn’t attempt a pass on the night.
Sweeney had 60 yards on six attempts to pace the Hornets.
