Error-plagued Post 7 drops 14-7 decision to Kingwood Post 56

Buckhannon Post 7’s Taylor Whitehair and Kingwood Post 56 catcher Dillon Williams reacts to a pop foul during the first inning of their American Legion contest Tuesday night at William E. Phillips Memorial Field. Whitehair collected two hits in the contest but Post 7 dropped a 14-7 decision.

TENNERTON – Tony Gwynn, one of baseball’s best pure hitters in the game once said, “We know we're better than this, but we can't prove it.”

That seemed to be the case for Buckhannon Post 7 when they faced off against Kingwood Post 56 here Tuesday night at William E. Phillips Memorial Field.

Buckhannon, a much better team than their performance showed Tuesday, committed more errors than they scored runs in a sloppily played game that they lost by a 14-7 score.

Post 7 committed eight errors during the game as they made a miscue in five of the seven innings.

“Most of them were unforced errors as well,” remarked Buckhannon Post 7 general manager Kevin Boring. “We decided to just throw the ball around.”

Kingwood struck first in the top of the first with a pair of runs behind a Buckhannon error.

Post 7 responded with a trio of runs in their half of the first.

Logan Bailey started the inning off with a single to left and then swiped second. Following a ground out that moved him to third, he raced home on Nick Calef-Boring’s single to left.

A ground out moved Calef-Boring to second and Casey Hamner’s single moved him to third.

Taylor Whitehair singled home Calef-Boring and courtesy runner Wesley Rosencrance scored all the way from first when the ball was misplayed giving Post 7 a 3-2 lead.

Buckhannon added to their lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run, two-out single by Calef-Boring that scored Bailey and Alek Seech treating Post 7 to a 5-2 advantage.

A pair of Buckhannon errors opened the door for Kingwood to score two runs in the top of the third to close the gap to 5-4.

Buckhannon upped their lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth when Bailey began the frame with a single, swiped second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Calef-Boring.

The wheels fell off the bus for Post 7 in the top of the fifth as Kingwood sent 11 batters to the plate for a seven-run inning.

They mustered seven hits in the inning to go along with three Buckhannon errors as they took an 11-6 lead.

Buckhannon stayed in the game with a run in their half of the inning making it an 11-7 game.

Whitehair started the inning with a single, went to second on a ground out and dashed home on Elijah Arbogast’s double down the right field line.

Kingwood however wasn’t done at the plate as they scored three more times in the top of the sixth inning for their 14-7 lead.

Kingwood outhit Buckhannon by an 18-10 margin.

Bailey, Calef-Boring and Whitehair each picked up two hits for Buckhannon.

Arbogast (1-1) suffered the lost for Post 7 in a relief role.

Chase Setler led Kingwood at the plate with three hits.

Austin Forbes earned the win for Kingwood starting the game and going four innings. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits.

Jake Spearon earned a three-inning save surrendering just one run on three hits.

The loss dropped Buckhannon to 7-10 heading into tonight’s home game with Clarksburg.

First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.

They will then travel to Summersville on Sunday.
