Error-plagued Lady Bucs fall to Parkersburg South


PARKERSBURG – Sometimes something happens on the playing field that you just thought you would never, ever see.

Buckhannon-Upshur head softball coach Levi Bender had to feel that way after watching his Lady Bucs perform against the Parkersburg South Patriots in a road contest Thursday evening.

The Lady Bucs committed 13 errors in an 18-12 setback.

‘It was like watching the Bad News Bears play,” remarked Bender about the 13 errors. “We were able to hit the softball.”

That the Lady Bucs did as they managed 16 hits in the contest.

The Lady Bucs scored three times in the top of the first with Shelby McDaniels hitting a triple that brought home Megan Bailey and then scoring on a passed ball and Hayden Peters hitting a one-run single that scored Brooklyn Robinson who had walked.

Parkersburg South scored twice in the bottom of the second, but the Lady Bucs countered with two of their own in the top of third behind a one-run double from Robinson and a one-run single from Jansen Kimble.

The Lady Bucs made it 6-2 in the top of the third when Peters led off the inning with a double, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kayli Curry and raced home on a single by McKinley Bonnett.

Parkersburg South scored five times in the bottom of the third for a 7-6 lead, but B-U added two more in the top of the fourth.

McDaniels started the inning with a near miss of a home run settling for a double and scored on Robinson’s single to left field. Robinson later came home on a sacrifice fly by Peters giving the lead back to the Lady Bucs, at 8-7.

Parkersburg South scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead at 10-8, but B-U make it a 10-9 game in the top of the fifth on a one-run single from McDaniels.

Parkersburg South blew the game wide open in the 

bottom of the fifth inning with an eight-run outburst taking an 18-9 lead.

The Lady Bucs wrapped up the scoring with three runs in the top of the seventh getting a one-run single from Bailey and a two-run single from McDaniels.

McDaniels was a perfect five-for-five at the plate with four RBIs while Bailey had three hits and Robinson, Peters and Bonnett two each.

The loss dropped the Lady Bucs to 7-8 on the season.

The Lady Bucs will return to action Monday visiting University for a 5 p.m. clash and then making a trip to Kingwood to face Preston Tuesday at 5 p.m.
