Double play in seventh inning gives Lady Bucs 7-6 win over Minutemaids

Ciara Melton (12) of the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs delivers a pitch Wednesday evening against the East Fairmont Lady Bees. The Lady Bucs lost a 7-1 decision but came back to beat Lewis County Thursday by a 7-6 score as Melton earned the save and hit a two-run home run on ‘Senior Day.’

TENNERTON – A top of the seventh bases-loaded double play preserved a 7-6 win for the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Bucs against the Lewis County Minutemaids Thursday evening in a Big 10 Conference softball game.

On ‘Senior Day’ for the Lady Bucs, they built a 6-1 lead but watched Lewis County deadlock the game at 6-6 before they scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 7-6 advantage.

Lewis County loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one out but Buckhannon-Upshur reliever Ciara Melton forced Emma Cayton to hit into a double play when Kyndra Spotloe caught her fly ball in right field and then fired it home as the Lady Buc catcher Shelby McDaniels tagged out pinch runner Tatum Conner at the plate.

“Kyndra came up with a huge catch and throw to end the game at the plate,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Levi Bender.

Alyssa Rohr took the circle for the first time in a couple of weeks returning from an injury to earn the win.

She pitched 5 2/3 innings and gave up five earned runs on nine hits and struck out five.

Ciara Melton pitched a scoreless final 1 1/3 innings for the save.

“We played an all-around great game,” stated Bender. “Alyssa pitched well in her first game back. She threw well but had some back luck and Lewis County found a way to claw back into the game. They have a good core of players.”

B-U took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a one-run single by Shelby McDaniels and made it 2-0 in the bottom of the second on a one-run single by Rohr.

Lewis County scored an unearned run in the top of the third but the Lady Bucs answered with two more runs in their half of the third on a two-run blast by Melton that scored Alli Robinson to make it a 4-1 game.

A solo home run by Brooklyn Bryant and a misplayed fly ball hit by McDaniels allowed Rohr to score in the bottom of the fourth to up the Lady Buc lead to 6-1.

A three-run fifth inning for Lewis County closed the contest to 6-4 and a two-run home run by a Morgan Riffle in the top of the sixth tied the game at 6-6.

The Lady Bucs pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth when Alli Robinson drew a bases loaded walk that scored Audrey Gaudet.

“That was an extremely mature at-bat because everyone at the park wanted her to hit something hard and in the air but she didn’t fall into a poor situation and took advantage of what she was given,” stated Bender.

The Lady Bucs collected 10 hits in the victory with Rohr going a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while Bryant collected two hits.

“I thought we did a good job at the plate,” remarked Bender. “Rohr was great at the plate and we got two big home runs from Melton and Bryant.

“Overall it was a crazy game. Many teams would have fallen into the ‘Oh no, here we go again trap’ and feel sorry for themselves but our young squad found a way to fight through as a team  and fend-off a three-loss Lewis County team.”

A day earlier at home, the Lady Bucs dropped a 7-1 contest to East Fairmont.

The lone Lady Buc run came in the bottom of the third with B-U down 2-0 when Melton singled home Alli Robinson.

B-U managed just four hits in the contest with Rohr, McDaniels, Melton and Hayden Peters each getting one each.

Friday’s outing with Preston was rained out.

The split left the Lady Bucs with a 13-8 record heading into their Saturday clash with Petersburg.

They will return to action today when they visit Philip Barbour at 5 p.m. for a Big 10 Conference tilt.
