Don’t miss Buckhannon’s first Rib Fest Saturday

BUCKHANNON — Get a taste of the south locally this Saturday, at the first annual Almost Heaven Rib Fest at the BiCentennial Inn in Buckhannon.

The Almost Heaven Rib Fest will feature some of the top BBQ teams in the country—all competing for cash, trophies, and of course, bragging rights. There are currently 14 teams from five different states registered to compete. The “A Team” is coming all the way from Corpus Christi, Texas and is currently the number two BBQ team in rib points in the United States. “That is serious,” noted Almost Heaven Rib Fest organizer and local resident Jody Light. “It will be a great opportunity for people to see some of the best pitmasters at work.”

This event is a little teaser to the big event everyone has come to know and love—the Almost Heaven BBQ Bash, coming once again to Stonewall Resort this summer. The Almost Heaven Rib Fest is a small-scale event compared to the BBQ Bash and is intended to create some competition and outdoor fun for the community and surrounding areas. These notable teams will solely be competing, but the public will also be able to get their fingers sticky with the championship BBQ, IF they order online in advance at

Light articulated, “We quietly began planning a small rib contest earlier, but waited until the Governor lifted restrictions on events before adding other activities for families to enjoy. It was planned rather quickly, but we felt it would be a great time to bring some BBQ back to Buckhannon.”

Championship BBQ teams will be smoking mouthwatering ribs, as well as offering sides such as smoked baked beans, cole slaw, mini ears of corn, desserts and beverages, according to Light. Kid’s meals will also be available and will include a hot dog, corn, applesauce, baked beans, dessert and a beverage. BBQ meals will be $20 if pre-ordered and pre-paid online, or $25 if paying the day of the event until sold out. Kid’s meals will be available for only $5.

Aside from the BBQ, numerous games and activities for the family will be set up on the lawn of the BiCentennial Inn. Cornhole, crafters, the Sweet-A-Licious ice cream truck, Zul’s frozen lemonade, and Hippy Dippy Donuts will all be available this Saturday.

The BINGO event originally planned for Saturday has been cancelled due to concerns over a proper space for the event, but plans are underway to reschedule BINGO for later this year. However, the Stockert Youth and Community Center Drill Team will execute a special performance at 4:30 p.m. and will include special fire twirlers.

Light wanted to provide a special thank you to the City of Buckhannon for their sponsorship, BiCentennial Inn for the space, Buckhannon-Upshur Retail Merchants Association, Ringers, Jimmy Joe’s Smokin’ Que, Jaws BBQ, Zul’s, and all other volunteers involved in making this event possible.

Light emphasized that the Almost Heaven Rib Fest will be a safe and healthy event with the help of local law enforcement, EMS, fire departments, and the local health department ensuring proper guidelines are being followed.

“Everyone has waited for so long to be able to get out and do something fun, so we hope this Saturday will provide that opportunity. We hope it is a great day for folks to just get out and enjoy themselves,” Light told The Record Delta.

Bring the whole family and your appetite for this first ever Almost Heaven Rib Fest right here in downtown Buckhannon this Saturday, May 1.
