BUCKHANNON — The Animal Care and Control Commission met briefly on Monday evening at City Hall for discussion of their monthly reports. In attendance was Mayor Robbie Skinner, Financial Director Amberle Jenkins, City Recorder Randy Sanders, Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility Representative Elissa Linger, and Commission Member Alison Whitehair.
The Commission members discussed the possibility of turning the water spigot back on at the Dog Park. This will allow owners to fill water bowls for their dogs when using the facility. The spigot was reportedly turned off for COVID-19 sanitation measures. The members voted to return the spigot to order for use by Dog Park guests.
Public Works Director Jerry Arnold reported that he has been working to get internet access at the Dog Park to allow for the installation of security cameras. Arnold said he continues to attempt correspondence with West Virginia Wesleyan College for help on the project, as the park is very close to campus.
In addition, a memorial wall will soon be placed near the dog park. Arnold asked the Commission members to decide what the sign at the facility should read. The members unanimously agreed on “Honor and Memorial Wall” with the City of Buckhannon’s seal on display. This motion will be taken to the next Consolidated Public Works meeting.
The members discussed the monthly activity reports for the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility. The reports were approved as presented.
Lisa Critchfield, member of the Dog Park Committee, submitted a letter ensuring the installation of brick around the bone structure at the dog park. The brick installation is scheduled to begin once the security cameras are placed.
Elissa Linger discussed the possibility of holding Whisker Wonderland and Paws in the Park this year, as they were cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. Official decisions regarding the fundraisers will be made at a later date, as COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions continue to be lifted.
The next Animal Care & Control Commission meeting will take place on July 12 in Council Chambers.
