BUCKHANNON — The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department is investigating two deaths that are believed to be connected.
Late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, the sheriff’s department was alerted to alleged child abuse of a 3-year-old girl, according to Sheriff David Coffman.
St. Joseph’s Hospital staff contacted 911 that they needed an officer to respond to their facility because the child had been brought in with injuries.
“She was pretty much immediately transferred from St. Joseph’s Hospital to Ruby Memorial Hospital, where she remained until the time of her death this week,” Coffman said.
The sheriff said he is not releasing the name of the 3-year-old at this time out of respect for the family.
The second death occurred on Wednesday.
Coffman and deputies responded to an emergency call on the Post Road off Turkey Run Road, where Christopher Radcliff, 23, of Buckhannon, was found deceased.
A press release from the sheriff’s department called the death ‘suspicious.’
Coffman said he could not release more information on how the two deaths could be related or if Radcliff was related to the 3-year-old.
An obituary for Radcliff can be found on Page 3 of today’s paper.
“We are still gathering information,” Coffman said.
The sheriff said forensic testing and autopsy results will play a role in the investigation.
“We will have the answers to many questions in the future,” he said.
No arrests have been made in connection to the deaths.
Deputy Seth Cutright is the lead investigator.
