Day 3: GMAC/MEC Swimming Championship Recap

CANTON (Ohio) — The third day of competition wrapped up  on Thursday at the 2021 GMAC/MEC Swimming and Diving Championships at the C.T. Branin Natatorium.

UNC Pembroke's Gillian Manning posted her second win of the championship with a win in the 200 freestyle. She finished with a time of 1:54.37. Teammate Nathalia Silva was sixth in the race with a time of 1:56.04.

UNCP's Mariel Mencia Martinez was runner-up in the 100 butterfly (57.05), and teammate Caterina Coughlin was sixth with a time of 58.55. The Braves' Ketlyn Rodriguez Matos was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.04), and Fairmont State's Zsofi Bevardi had a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM (4:43.18).

In the 200 freestyle relay, UNCP was a runner-up with a time of 1:36.29. Frostburg State was fourth (1:42.22), and Notre Dame was fifth (1:42.43).

UNCP remained in third place on the women's side with 690 points. Hillsdale leads with 1,170.50 points, followed by Findlay. After the Braves, Malone (531.5) was fourth and Notre Dame was fifth (374).

On the men's side, Frostburg State had a pair of runner-up finishes in individual events with Andrew Creelman in the 100 fly (50.61), and Noah Loper in the 400 IM (4:11.50). Notre Dame's Ashton Smith was fourth in the 100 fly (51.99), and WVWC's Michael McAlpine was fifth with a time of 52.42. NDC's Adonis Thomas was third in the 400 IM (4:15.69), and teammate Daniel Alvarez was fourth with a time of 4:17.24. Smith was also third in the 200 freestyle (1:42.27), just ahead of Frostburg State's Anthony Giuseppetti (1:43.72) and WVWC's Arthur Assfeld.

Davis & Elkins Jiwh Santos got on the podium with a third-place finish in the 100 back (52.28), and teammate Geoff Dixon was fourth (52.37), with Giuseppetti was fifth (52.99) in the event. D&E's Enrique Garcia was the top finisher from the MEC in the 100 breaststroke taking fourth (56.57). Fairmont State's Majester Abdul-Jalil was sixth (58.07), with his teammate Tyler Virture finishing in seventh with a time of 58.24.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Notre Dame's team took third with a time of 1:26.84. WVWC was fourth (1:27.35) and Frostburg State was fifth (1:27.39).

Findlay continued to lead in the team standings for the men with a score of 1,088.50. Notre Dame is in second with 685 points, followed by Davis & Elkins (637.5) and Malone (635.5).

Competition concluded Friday with prelims being held in the morning and the finals beginningin the evening.
