Cutlip scores 19 as Bucs thrash Huskies, 67-47

TENNERTON – Brayden Cutlip scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer basketball team throttled the North Marion Huskies Tuesday evening in Big 10 Conference action by a 67-47 score.

“We have been waiting on that performance from Brayden,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Travis Foster. “He had a slow start but really finished strong. Getting him healthy was a big deal for us. If we can keep him dialed in he is going to be a disaster for other teams.”

In a tight game heading into the third quarter, the Bucs used a 26-6 run during the eight-minute period to secure their second win of the year.

The Bucs trailed in the first quarter by a 9-7 score, but Jacob Loudin turned in an old-fashioned three-point play, made a lay-up 26 seconds later and Ryan Hurt unleashed a trey to give the Bucs a 15-9 lead at the end of the opening frame.

North Marion went on a 14-7 run to take a 23-22 lead, but Cutlip put in a lay-up with 15 seconds left in the second and then closed the half making a foul shot to give the Bucs a 25-23 advantage at the break.

After the two teams traded baskets to start the third quarter, the Bucs went on a 10-0 run.

Cutlip and Jacob Loudin hit jumpers, Hurst scored on a lay-up, Cutlip nailed a jumper in the paint and Will McCauley flipped in two foul shots during the run to treat the Bucs to a 37-25 lead.

North Marion interrupted the run with a basket, but the Bucs scored eight unanswered to push their lead to 45-27.

McCauley scored on a lay-up, Zach White scored two on a put back, Hurst went inside for a lay-up and Josh Loudin connected on a jumper during the run.

Josh Loudin ended the quarter in thrilling fashion with a steal and throwing down a two-handed dunk to give the Bucs a 51-29 lead after three-quarters of action.

Cutlip took over the fourth-quarter with 11 points making sure no comeback was in store for the Huskies.

The highlight of the fourth quarter occurred at the 4:09 mark when the junior center went inside and powered down another dunk for the Bucs.

He was fouled on the dunk and made the free throw to put the Bucs ahead by a 61-40 score.

North Marion closed the game on a 7-6 run.

“I thought we made big plays when we needed them,” remarked Foster. “A lot of our young guys really stepped up. We came off of a terrible practice the day before and I was really worried with how we would play, but the young kids changed it before the game and was ready to play and that means a lot. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

The Bucs shot an impressive 54.6 percent for the game hitting on 30 of their 55 attempts.

Following Cutlip in the scoring column was Hurst with 13 points and McCauley with nine.

Hurst also grabbed seven assists and dished out two assists.

“We stayed structured in the offense,” Foster remarked. “We didn’t fall in love with the trey this game. I really think we wore North Marion down and they didn’t want to guard.”

The Bucs held North Marion to a 34.6 percent night shooting the ball.

Michael Garrett led the Huskies with 12 points.

North Marion dropped to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Big 10 Conference.

Buckhannon-Upshur improved to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big 10 Conference.

The Bucs will return to action Saturday when they host Wheeling Park at 7:30 p.m.

They will follow that up with a trip to Kingwood on Dec. 27  facing Preston at 7:30 p.m.
