Cross-country Bucs earn runner-up honors at own invitational as Gillum runs fifth

Julius Hobbs of the Buckhannon-Upshur cross-country Bucs makes a turn during the Buccaneer Invitational held Tuesday at the high school. Hobbs finished 12th with a time of 19:47.93. The Bucs took runner-up honors with 52 points.

TENNERTON – Jordan Gillum of the Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneers had a top five finish in the Buccaneer Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the high school in B-U’s lone home meet of the year.

Gillum ran fifth out of 52 runners with a time of 18:32.65.

Charlie Smoak of Elkins won the race with a time of 17:45.89 while Carter Bowie of South Harrison took runner-up honors with a time of 18:09.96. Drew Moore of East Fairmont was third with a time of 18:13.67 and Luke Hawranick of East Fairmont was fourth with a time of 18:25.83.

A total of eight teams competed but only four had full rosters.

East Fairmont won the team title with 23 points while the Bucs took second place with 52 points.

Elkins ran third with 61 points while Robert C. Byrd rounded out the field placing fourth with 105 points.

Julius Hobbs ran 12th for the Bucs with a time of 19:47.93 while Reis Leonard finished 13th with a clocking of 20:08.94.

Rounding out the B-U scoring were Brycen Allen in 15th (20:24.11) and Harrison Walker in 16th (20:31.94).

Spencer Vaught was 21st for B-U with a time of 21:13.62, Phillip Setterlund was 23rd with a clocking of 21:17.19, Logan Wyatt ran 30th in a time of 23:08.88, Leon Wyatt placed 41st with a clocking of 25:19.51, Jackson McNeish ran 45th with a time of 26:19.23, Ryan Tenney took 49th with a time of 28:43.79 and Rhett Ammons finished 50th with a time of 30:18.74.

The Bucs will run again Saturday at the Fairmont Senior Invitational at the Apple Valley Golf Course.
