Create Buckhannon votes to be considered as BBQ Bash location

BUCKHANNON — Members of Create Buckhannon met at the Oprah House in Buckhannon on Thursday, August 18 to discuss the possible inclusion of the Almost Heaven BBQ Bash during Festival Fridays 2023.

Almost Heaven BBQ Bash Director Jody Light attended the meeting to discuss the different technicalities needed for consideration before the inclusion could take place; the discussion was in a hypothetical timeline. The bash is a West Virginia State BBQ Championship, where professional BBQ teams from across the United States compete for $15,000 in prize money and a chance to represent W.Va. at the Jack Daniels Worldwide Invitational BBQ Tournament. The event has been known to include an SCA sanctioned steak contest, lots of family activities, a cornhole tournament, a dime toss, “More than Just a Cake Walk,” inflatable games, unique artists and crafters, a beer garden and much more.

The 2022 bash was held at Stonewall Resort, another contending location, along with the City of Weston. “We want to gather as much information as possible to help us finalize a decision,” said Light.

If the decision is made to host the bash in Buckhannon, it would take place at Jawbone Park, located on Madison Street. Many of the members, including Rich Clemens and Randy Sanders, agreed on the idea to have Festival Friday vendors take a week off to allow the bash to be the highlight, still including many of the attractions that brings people to town.

The parking issue was also brought to attention. Light informed that there would be a shuttle to take visitors from parking to the event location. This would help with the congestion on Main Street and other high traffic parking locations.

After much discussion, the group made a motion to relinquish the certain dates to allow the bash to be held. It was seconded and passed by majority vote.

“We are not here to step on your toes. We just want this to be a positive thing for the community,” said Light.

Different ideas are being tossed around to ensure the event remains family friendly for all visitors, while still allowing adults to have fun.
