Hard working hands are laid to rest, and a golden heart has stopped as Crawford Byrd, 84, of Weston has gone home to Heaven. He left this world on May 10, 2019 from Stonewall Jackson Hospital in Weston.
He blessed this world and his family on Aug. 21, 1934 in Kershaw, SC, a son of the late Julius Baxter and Daisy Hunter Byrd. He lost his mother at the age of 3 but was blessed with the love of his step-mother, Kathryn Byrd, for the remainder of her life.
On Oct. 10, 1954, Crawford made his sweetheart his wife. He and Alice Ann Butcher Byrd spent over 64 happy years in marriage.
Crawford bravely served in the Korean War as an Airman of United States Air Force and retired with 20 years of service to his country and fellow Americans. After his military retirement, Crawford was employed as a truck driver for Halliburton, Interstate Chemical and Worldwide Equipment.
He enjoyed being outdoors fishing and golfing in beautiful West Virginia, but his greatest joys came from spending time with his family. Crawford especially loved watching his granddaughters play softball.
The legacy of this hero is carried on by his wife, two children: Jeffrey Lynn Byrd and wife, Lisa, of Raleigh, NC, and Kristi Crook and husband, Larry, of Weston; two grandchildren: Kaelye and Ashley Crook; one brother-in-law, Clyde Wallace of Laurinburg, NC; two nieces: Reca Boltin of Columbia, SC, and Michelle Oakley of Cheraw, SC; and one great-niece: Lela Oakley of Cheraw, SC.
Crawford was preceded in death by his three parents and one sister, Mary Wallace.
At his request there will be a private family service before his cremation.
We, at Pat Boyle Funeral Home and Cremation Service located at 144 Hackers Creek Rd. in Jane Lew, appreciate the service and sacrifice of Crawford Byrd. It has been our honor and privilege to serve his family. Online condolences may be expressed at www.PatBoyleFuneralHome.com.
