BUCKHANNON — A young couple remains at Tygart Valley Regional Jail after being charged in connection to a local heroin overdose death that occurred on November 4.
Michaela Dawn Gregory, age 24, stands accused of felony delivery of a controlled substance resulting in death, while Zane Matthew Young, also age 24, faces felony charges of conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
According to the criminal complaints, the Mountain Lakes Drug and Violent Crime Unit arranged a “buy bust” after discovering that Gregory had delivered nine heroin stamps in exchange for $160 to a local man who subsequently died due to a heroin overdose last week.
Members of the task force reportedly assumed the deceased’s identity and arranged to purchase more heroin from Gregory after she had allegedly messaged the man’s phone asking if he needed any more.
Court documents said the officers then set up a controlled buy from Gregory near Lowe’s in Buckhannon, as they pretended to be the man who had already died. After the woman reportedly changed the meeting location to Walmart, officers pulled in behind her vehicle to conduct the arrest. Zane Young was with Gregory at the time of the bust, so he was detained as well. A search of the vehicle also yielded a brick of heroin and $748 in cash.
Gregory remains incarcerated in lieu of a $250,000 cash only bond. Zane’s bond was set at $40,000 and he is also being held on pending charges out of Randolph County.
