Council refers financing to Building Commission

BUCKHANNON — The Buckhannon City Council held a special meeting in person at City Hall on Thursday afternoon. Members of the community were welcome to attend by visiting in person with required masks, or by calling in.

The sole item on the agenda was the execution of engagement of Steptoe and Johnson, PLLC as a legal bond counsel for the City of Buckhannon Building Commission, regarding Financing and Acquisition of Property located at 395 Mudlick Road.

Upon City Attorney Tom O’Neill’s recommendation, the Council unanimously voted to refer the matter to the Building Commission for financing.

O’Neill explained, “The Building Commission would engage financing through a bond issue and then lease the property to the city in exchange for lease payments, which would then be used to service the bonds.”

After voting, City Recorder Randall Sanders swore in three of the five Building Commission members present, which included Maureen Wilson, Lewis Simmons and Jeff Harvey. Other members, Renee Preston and Matt Kerner, were unable to make it to the meeting.

The three members then nominated and voted Dr. Jeff Harvey as the Chairman of the Commission.

The next Buckhannon City Council meeting will be held on Thursday, November 5.
