Completions heats up as 2022 regular season winds down at Elkins Speedway

Mitch Thomas takes the checkered flag in the Modifieds Division featured race.

KERANS — With just three weeks of regular racing season at Kerans’ Elkins Raceway, the 2022 summer season is entering backstretch and the battle for the points championship is in full swing. As drivers speed towards the end of the season, each race, each win means more, setting the scene for last Saturday, August 6 dirt-track action.

In the Super Lates Division, Shane and Logan Hitt put on an absolute show. Logan got things started by taking the pole after recording the fastest lap time in qualifying at 15.010 seconds. In the first 10-lap heat, Shane got the better of Logan; collecting the win. The pair sat out the second heat, won by Bob Gordan, before resuming the duel in the 10-car main event. Ultimately, Logan bested Shane and the rest of the field in the 30-lap main event to cap off a dominant performance from the pair in the Super Lates Division.

In the Crates Division, Brent Trimble was the car to beat early, getting out of the gates with a strong qualifying lap time of 15.369 seconds to earn the pole for the first eight-lap heat. Trimble leveraged the pole into a win in the first heat. However, AJ Spangnuolo came on strong late, picking up the win second heat before finding his way to victory lane following the 25-lap featured race.

In the Modifieds Division, Mitch Thomas turned in another championship level late season performance, setting the fast lap time in qualifying at 16.116 seconds, before winning the first of two six-lap heats. Thomas capped off his stellar Saturday night by racking up another featured win, fending off any and all challengers during the 20-lap sprint to the finish.

In the Street Stock Division, Michael Ayersman cruised his way to victory lane in the 15-lap main event. Ayersman dominated the field from start to finish Saturday night, setting the fastest lap time in qualify at 17.139 seconds before leveraging his pole into wins in both the first six-lap heat and the featured race.

In the Hot Mods Division, Santino Loretta was able to fend off both Michael and Joshua Simpson in the 15-lap main event. Loretta’s night got off to a great start as he took the pole after turning in a lap time of 17.771 seconds. Loretta followed up his strong qualifying run with a win in the first six-lap heat before capping his night off with a win in the main event.

With the 2023 summer season rapidly winding down, there isn’t much time left for dirt track racing fans to make their way out to a race. Next Saturday, August 13 presents a perfect opportunity to attend, as Elkins Raceway will be holding their second Autograph and Picture Night of the season. Originally scheduled for Saturday, August 6, Autograph and Picture Night was pushed back to a later date due to inclement weather conditions. Autograph and Picture night gives fans a chance to gather on a designated stretch of the track and meet their favorite drivers. Elkins Raceway encourages fans to come out and get photos, get memorabilia signed and get to know the drivers who keep the ages old tradition of dirt track racing in West Virginia alive. The following weekend on Saturday, August 20 will see the last week of regular racing before Saturday, August 27’s Fall 50, fireworks and 2022 championship races.
