Coffman low medalist as Golf Bucs win tri-match at Elkins; drop close home dual outing to University

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Issac Lane eyes up his putt on the fifth hole at the Buckhannon Country Club during a dual match with University. Lane led the Bucs with a 42 but they came up just short to the Hawks losing by three strokes.

ELKINS – The Buckhannn-Upshur golf team turned in another victory on Wednesday in a tri-match against Elkins and East Fairmont at the Elks Golf Course in Elkins.

Evan Coffman took low medalist honors with a 39 to lead the Bucs, who shot a team score of 171.

Elkins was second with a 216 while East Fairmont took third with a 220.

The Bucs took the top five spots.

Isaac Lane took runner-up honors with a 42 while Brady Hurst and Tucker Hurst tied for third with 45s and Landon Hitt was fifth with a 48.

Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Westfall said it was the best his Bucs have looked all year.

“It was our best outing of the year,” Westfall remarked. “I am very proud of Evan for breaking into the 30s. Tucker had another career day and I am so excited for him. We are growing and improving each day and it’s fun to be a part of it. We need to stay focused and never be satisfied but the boys have represented Buckhannon-Upshur very well this season.”

On Tuesday, the Bucs dropped a narrow decision to University in a home match at the Buckhannon Country Club.

University shot a 184 while the Bucs checked in with a 187.

University’s Jack Giobbia earned low medalist honors with a 40 while Lane took second with a 42.

The rest of the B-U scoring belonged to Coffman with a 47 and Hitt and Tucker Hurst with 49s.

Non-scoring Bucs were Brady Hurst with a 49 and Brenna Morgan with a 63.

“We didn’t really play our best golf against University and we really wanted this one,” said Westfall. “We expect to be successful but we have to put ourselves in a place to earn it first.”

The Bucs were slated to visit Bel Meadow on Thursday then return home Monday to face Morgantown and Elkins at 4 p.m.
