FAIRMONT – Buckhannon-Upshur’s Evan Coffman held off the challenges of 67 golfers to earn low medalist honors at the Marion County Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Green Hills Country Club.
Coffman carded a 75 for low medalist honors.
“Evan played well and all of his hard work is paying off,” said Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Westfall. “He has been working so hard on his game and for him to score well against some of the best golfers in the state should let others know it as well.”
Behind Coffman there was a three-way tie for second place as Owen Newbold of Morgantown, Justin Doerr of Wheeling Central and Gavin Goodrich of Wheeling Park all shot 77s.
Coffman helped the Bucs to a fifth-place finish in the extremely talented field of 17 teams.
The Bucs shot a 252 while Cabell Midland took first place with a 236.
Wheeling Park was second with a 244 while Wheeling Central was third with a 248 and St Mary’s was fourth with a 251.
Landon Hitt shot an 88 for the Bucs while Isaac Lane checked in with an 89 and Tucker Hurst a 102.
“Landon hit great irons all day but could not get his putting under control,” noted Westfall. “He three-putted almost every green and parred the last six holes. Isaac had a tough day and he was not happy with his score. He knows how to recover and get back on track. For us to reach our goals as a team and individually, he needs to correct some things. Tucker got himself in trouble all day with the multiple blind shots and tight conditions.”
While Westfall was pleased with his team’s fifth-place performance, he feels like his team could have finished higher.
“I’m proud of Evan and the team, however, I felt we had the potential to win the invitational overall,” said Westfall. “It was still a great tournament and great competition for us. It lets us know where we stand somewhat in the state. We still have some work to do.”
The Bucs were slated to host an event on Monday at the Buckhannon Country Club.
They will visit Oglebay Resort today and then travel to Bridgeport on Wednesday.
