Coffman earns low medalist honors as golf Bucs take second at Bel Meadow

MOUNT CLARE – Evan Coffman turned in another strong performance as he shot a career low and earned low medalist honors for the Buckhannon-Upshur golf Buccaneers Friday in a five-team event at Bel Meadow Golf Course.

During the 18-hole outing, Coffman shot a 37 on the front nine and a 41 on the back nine for a 78.

He was three strokes better than University’s Jack Giobbia who took runner-up honors with an 81.

“Coffman really played well and was confident all day in soggy conditions,” remarked Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Jason Westfall.

The Bucs finished second in the team standings with a 358 while Keyser won the event with a 353.

University was third with a 364, Fairmont Senior was fourth with a 373 and Morgantown was fifth with a 380.

Landon Hitt finished in the top 10 for the Bucs placing seventh overall with an 88 (47-41).

Isaac Lane and Tucker Hurst rounded out the B-U scoring as Lane finished with a 93 (44-49) and Hurst carded a 99 (48-51).

The rest of the B-U line-up was Bryson Bastida with a 99 (53-46) and Brady Hurst with a 100 (47-53).

“Hitt really stepped up and had a strong back nine,” stated Westfall. “He started to relax and hit some nice golf shots which helped his score. Some of our veterans had a tough day and they need to bounce back. We have depth competing for spots this year which has raised the bar. Bastida worked into the sixth spot today and was tight on the front nine but posted a respectable back nine.”

After the match, the team learned that University and Morgantown had their seasons suspended as Monongalia County went red on the state’s COVID-19 map that afternoon.

“It was a good day of golf for all teams, however, after the match we learned our opponent’s season has been suspended,” concluded Westfall. “That was difficult to hear. Golf is a big family and we support our brothers and sisters.”

With the Bucs going 3-1 at the event, they improved their overall record to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the region.

The Bucs were slated to play Monday in Elkins.

They will return to action today at the Clarksburg Country Club facing off against Robert C. Byrd and Bridgeport.
